I'm trying to pick out a laptop for college, and I feel utterly swamped with indecision. I'm thinking of a Toshiba with the i3-330m processor, but only b/c of the battery life and a snappy salesman. I need something with at least:
4gb ram
2GHz processing speed
Dual Core
100GB memory
Under 700$
4 Hours Battery Life*****
Many Karma's for a good soul to help me in my quest.

I'm no super computer wiz but here's my 2 cents...
I still have my 6 year old powerbook pro. still runs and operates great. Had to replace the battery last year, but that was only $100. Mac offers decent student discounts on top of a decent refurbished buy back program.
Can't run your schools Window's program on your Mac? Get a geek to Bootcamped that shit.
I have a nice iMac 24' at home, and the boyfriend Bootcamped it so he could play some Window's operated first person shooting game (I'm sure you all know the game).
Non-Macs (PC's window's based) are easy to adjust to your own specifications. Even I could do it. I find though that they last for a shorter period of time before they need adjustments. Macs are harder to play with the internals, but it can be done. Same boyfriend rebuilt a dead old iMac, motherboard and all, but it was considerably harder than a PC.
Over time, by the end of your college career whether a bootcamped Mac or some other computer, you will probably spend the same since the Mac with probably last longer even though it costs more at first.

I'm sorry, I just can't buy a Mac, it's not feasible. I am poor, my parents are poor, and i have 700$ for a laptop. Even if i could afford a mac, Apple's hipster campaign sickens me to my core, and i simply cannot indulge in their image more than I already have (yes, i own an ipod). Thanks for the Toshiba support guy above me, my decision is sadly persuaded by volume. I'm somewhat of a sheep. Bahhh!

you're going to want at least 200 gb of ram because of boredom. You're probably going to end up with 50 gb of music, and at least 20 gb of emulators

Perhaps, but i've never had over 4gigs of music at once. I don't download albums, i download particular songs that I love. I can't listen to music unless it's good, and the going is tough in that respect. I don't really play video games either, I much prefer outside or socializing.

A few of my friends have lenovos and say good things about them. I just checked out their site and came up with a laptop that fit the criteria you were looking for.

HP G71-430US
search around and I've seen it up to $200 off (making it around $575).
or better yet i'll make it easy:

four hours isn't alot of battery life either. you wouldn't survive a full day of class with that

I sat down for 9 hours a writing a final paper on my macbook pro and when i finished it had an hour and 30 minutes left of battery. I was typing and listening to music with my screen at 2/3 brightness and my ambient keyboard lighting all the way up. If battery is what you are interested get a macbook pro. With student discount it was $1000 and i got a ipod touch free (its a rebate).
It is also a beast of a machine too.

Out of those, it is very close between Dell/Toshiba. You don't have to get a Mac to get a Mac, you can run Bootcamp and other crossover programs going both ways, but the only real way to get the benefeits of both is by getting a used MacBook, getting BootCamp, and running Windows on your Mac. Depending on how much you spend on the MacBook just add around $100 for the necessary crossovers.

Thanks man, but i can get way more bang for the buck in an upscale toshiba, i don't know what they're thinking with the 800 dollar price tag.....the processing speed isn't that great, and that's like the second biggest factor next to battery life, which was amazing but doesn't quite make up for it. Anyway, +k for the help

and I remember you question which brand is the bomb show. I'm fond of Asus, but each company has screwed up now and again, you have to be more specific as to which model

$724

Step 1 - Remove every piece of bundled software.
Step 2 - Keep this laptop porn/limewire/toolbar free.
Step 3 - Down the road if you find its getting a big slow for what you may use it for, throw 8GB's of RAM in that bitch.
There is no reason why that laptop can't last you through college.
or you could get a netbook, a USB optical drive and save a butt-ton of money.
