That was a sick video. I was amazed how they lifted the whole shuttle over 500 feet then lowered it on the rocket boosters. Looks almost easy.

Isn't the government just farming it out to cheapest bidder- therefore your future space craft will be build in china and India!! It's a crying shame it's being canned, it's one of the first things anyone thinks of when they think of the states. That's was the disco's last flight too wasn't it?

awesome video. too bad about the cancellation, but the space shuttle is a disaster anyways. It was never anywhere near what they wanted it to be. Were it not for nixon/nasa's inablilty when it comes to PR we'd be landing on mars by now using modified versions of the rockets we went to the moon on. I'm happy the shuttle is ending, but a bit concerned about the future...

I consider the space program the only notable thing humans have ever accomplished. If there was a history of the universe space human space flight would be a footnote, every other accomplishment wouldn't even be worth listing.

That being said I think the space program stagnated at NASA. I think NASA is extremely valuable as a research and development entity but not as a commercial launch platform. For a long time NASA was underbidding commercial satellite launches at a huge loss just to stagnate private companies from developing space delivery platforms.

Hopefully we will see some new technology come out. I really think we are not far away from a carbon nanotube space elevator and might be even closer to some type of electromagnet room temperature super conductor launch runway. Imagine that, you just load up pods with shit and send it around a giant track until it builds up enough speed to go flying into orbit. Like a particle accelerator gun.

But maybe I am dreaming, recently it looks like bigotry and nationalism will kill us all.

as for the space shuttle program stuff being canceled, i dont see why the private sector cant just take over. just like how every other form of travel is owned by non-government companies, space flight should be like that too. they could do it at a wwaayy cheaper cost

Lower labor cost, large pool of intelligent well trained engineers, disposable R&D budgets, willingness to take risks, want to prove themselves on a national stage.

The real question is why you think private space vehicles would end up in the US.
