NS Photo Contest, Week 17

READ EVERYTHING PLEASE

Congrats to the Top 5 that we had with the Photojournalism topic. I loved everything I read, it was all so good.

How can you live knowing that the best downhill trail within 30 miles is highly illegal and highly patrolled? You can't. You can try, you can ride other trails, but you can't restrain the urge- you've heard stories of how legendary the only trail in town you've never ridden is. You've scoped it out- you know where it is, you know where it goes, and you know where it ends- on a university campus. And you know that the police drive past the trail's runout regularly, and even if you dodge them, it'll be tough explaining a V10 mysteriously appearing on campus.

So you go at night.

As a result of winning, he got to choose this week’s topic, which is:

Lighting

Pay very careful attention to how the light falls upon your subject, and control your light. Make it bend over for you and do what you want it to do. You can do this with speedlights, big lights, flashlights, car lights, cigarette lights, northern lights, sunlight... the list goes on. Just make sure its exactly perfect, as per your artistic vision.

Guidelines:
-you may post 1 PHOTO ONLY
-you have TWO WEEKS to capture your photo (any feedback on allowing 2 weeks time, good/bad?)
-no hating on photos, constructive criticism only
-we will have a voting thread to determine the top 5, then we will vote again to find the winner
-post your own photos
-click on embedded photos before judging, NS drains the color from them
-winner chooses the next topic
-you cannot win 2 times in a row, you can win twice, just not in a row
-PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go out and shoot! Do your best to not pull any files because it goes with the topic. We’re looking to have this be an active photography contest.

Hah yesss. I took this photo in 8th grade on a trip to switzerland. I had to fuck around with it a lot to make it look ok.

I know that I'm not allowed to win this week, but I like working with lighting a lot. I guess that's why I put forth the topic.

Here's a link to the Flickr page, because NS sucks the color out of photos more than Megan Fox sucks good acting out of being the best part of a movie.

This was shot on an overcast day around 8:00pm in a dark stairwell behind a movie theater. The sole source of *noticable* light is coming from above left, from a Nikon SB-26. I used the optical slave mode because my PC cord wouldn't go the distance, so the on-camera flash was up, but I had it dialed back to 1/64 power, so it makes such a negligible impact on the photo that it isn't even noticeable.

shot with my new T2i, i just set the exposure as low as it can and put it on monochrome all the lighting came from the sun, probably gunna need to click it.

^ Very nice work. I'd have liked to see the kayaker just a smidgeon to the right, more in those rapids, it would strengthen the composition in my opinion. Excellent shot technically, though, I really like running long exposures for ambient and freezing action with a flash.
