I wish my school had architecture. The closest was landscape architecture which isn't too bad but oh well. Im done in a week so too late for undergrad. I wish I could have done architecture though.

Not really a "major" (you US schools...), but I'm in a program at Dalhousie University (halifax, NS) which encompasses a Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master's of Architecture.

I was in architecture at MSU, but I switched majors to photography and writing after 3 semesters. Once I'm done with this I'll either finish that degree or go to grad school for fine art.

I almost went to Philadelphia university or Drexel for Architecture, but i decided to change my major to Business.   Is that Lehigh PA?  My uncle works there, i wasnt aware they had Architecture as a major.

Im starting at boise state this fall, they dont have a architecture major but they have a good engineering program, i think i want to do architecture, so i think i will do core classes then transfer somewhere that has a good architecture program.

Im open to suggestions, because im having a tough time deciding.

If you want to do arch. you're better off starting with that now rather than trying to transfer into it. Credits and classes aren't always the same even though they are similar majors. Arch follows a very specific curriculum and you're gonna need to go to a school with an accredited program and take all required courses/receive enough credits in order to take the licensing exam after you complete undergraduate studies. It takes alot of dedication. I'm actually drafting floor plans and shit for my final critique that's less than a week away. I guess i should get off NS haha hope this helps

I'm not too sure about engineering. I've always wanted to do Arch. so i never really looked into any other possible majors. I think the switch from Arch to Engineering would be easier than trying to switch into arch. Then again, switching from arch. to pretty much anything else will be easier haha

Engineering is more math and science than anything. Arch is about design, concepts, ideas. You not only design spaces, but everything needs to have a purpose. Engineering takes the ideas of the architect and turns them into reality by figuring out all the calculations, such a how many beams will it take to support this ceiling, etc.

Of course, there are many types of engineering: biochemical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, architectural (which is what i was talking about above a little), - so you really need to be specific on what type of engineering you'd want to do.

Well one thing i have always wanted to do is design gold courses, i have golfed all my life and this really intrigues me. I like to design things and solve things. I would like to be a engineer but im not sure what field i want to be in. And architecture is something i would like to do also but im not totally sold on it though.

It really is so brutal with the amount of work. Pretty much sleeping in the studio. I'd rather be doing this than writing papers though. Can't see myself doing anything else.

So I had my final critique of the semester this morning at 8am. I haven't slept in over 24 hours, and no more than 3-4 hours at a time for like 5 days before that. Thank god for redbull and adderall or else I have no clue how I would have made it. It was worth it in the end though, our group had the best critique out of the whole class. Now excuse me while I sleep for the next 48 hours straight..

Hahaha excellent. In one of the studios someone spray painted up on the wall, "FUCK SLEEP I GOT THIS SHIT." Haha the walls are pretty much covered in stuff like that.

I always say, architects are the gay brothers of engineers (in a good way, haha). Id be a arch major ASAP if i was creative, but im not


And Id say arch is pretty mathematical too, saarinen had to know what this meant to design the arch

got my m.arch at pratt institute in brooklyn a couple years ago, currently slaving on a 3d model at my desk. (actually, i'm lurking on ns, but who's counting.)

congrats to all those finishing up their crits, so glad i'm not you right now. people have no idea how ridiculous and stressful the workload is. my first midterm review in school, the jury made a grown man cry, and i wasn't sure i knew what i was getting myself into.

finally, black-bandanna: you ski, vault, and study architecture? stop ganking my life, man.

just finished up final crit of my sophomore year. I go to Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. Make sure you find an accredited program if your serious about it cause a non accredited degree won't mean shit when your looking for a job or trying to get licensed. I know Northeastern just got their accreditation revoked which sucks balllls for kids that were half way through.

It's hard work man and long hours but its a lot of fun. People shit on it constantly, even professors will tell you. I've heard a professor tell a student in class "are you sure you want to do architecture? Industrial design is nice too?" and I've been told on numerous occasions "architects don't make a lot of money, you know that right?" But if you like it and your ready to work hard it's a great program.

and the girl who said transfering into architecture is a bad idea is right, different schools have different curriculums I definitely be sure of where your transfering and what they'll take if you really want to do that, or you're gonna end up wasting a lot of money.

I'm looking to get into a good Architecture program when I graduate. Right now I'm slated up to be taking Portfolio Prep next year, and I'm taking Civil Engineering and Architecture right now. God knows what I'll be doing senior year. All honors and AP courses now as well. Seem like a good course load to prepare me for a college Archtitecture program?

i do all my virtual models in Rhinocerous, render with V Ray. But yeah i'm just finishing up my 4th year of arch. at NJIT. Its a tough major for sure, but I love it. Whoever says you can't have a social life as an architecture student just doesn't know how to balance the work and play. I average somewhere around a 3.1 and I party all the time. Not only do I spend lots of time working on architecture, I am the president of my fraternity (spare me the frats are gay bullshit, you'd see the difference if you came by my place, parties are a live ska band with Turbo playing on a projector in the background, sweet stuff), I routinely plant trees in my city (Newark, NJ), and I bartend one or two days a week. I know that is pretty much an epic claim, but I just want anyone on the fence about going into architecture to realize that as long as you are dedicated to working when you need to work, you can have fun with it. Just make sure it is something you are genuinely interested in, my school has under a 40% graduation rate for architects. If anyone interested in the major has questions, for serious PM me and I'll do what I can to answer questions. Yanno what? If any current design majors need someone to bounce ideas / designs off of, PM me as well. I know its the end of the semester, but it'd be pretty cool to have a Design Major cult. If I remember in the fall I'll make one, unless someone wants to take initiative.

haha i see a lot of kids in my year do shit like this. i worked construction for on and off for two years before going to school, i feel like that gives me a bit of an advantage when it comes to designing.

It depends on which school you attend.

My school functions more like a fine arts school (huge emphasis on studio culture, creative process/hand drawing)

I also know lots of schools that turn their students into CAD-monkey engi-tecturists.

Technological integration and building systems are a huge part of architecture (school+practice), but really, that component of your education is entirely manageable and quite enjoyable.

Before you count architecture out, inform yourself regarding the program layouts and philosophies of different schools.

this. schools are sooooo different. going to a place like RISD means you'll build a bunch of awesome models; going to columbia means you'll learn how to write code; going to notre dame or syracuse means you'll come out with a lot of good technical knowledge. and the funny thing is, this can determine what you'll do for years to come.

and just to debunk a super-common myth, in five years of working for different firms, i've never had to do any math that can't be done with a four-function calculator.

I know Im bumping this up, but I ran across it in my threads.

When you said you wouldnt mind seeing some ideas if people wanted to bounce them off you, I got an idea.

If anyone sees any interesting design competitions over the summer, post them up and we might be able to get people together on them. It might be difficult with distances and stuff but it could be worth a try. Otherwise Ill just be doing my portfolio and getting my website up.


As for rendering, I use sketch up and use IDX renderer (this is actually pretty good. Ill post up some stuff I did for a competition for a bridge for VW later) fuck it, ill do it now, but Im learning revit architecture 2009 right now.

messed around with that for a few months a little while back. i was in an independent study class my senior year of high school trying to teach the program to myself, i guess it woulda been easier if i wasn't trying to learn it that way haha good luck!

4th year architecture major at montana state.

do rendering with revit and often take things in to 3DS max for most building, and use rhino with vray for more curvy designs and 3d modeling or 3d printing and fabrication with rhinocam for CNC.

Yep I'm bumping a year old thread, oh well. Just really...really excited for today, my last architectural review in college ever. 5 years of no sleep, bad reviews, dismembered fingertips, and its all over now. Spent 140$ printing my layout,slept 4 hours last night, now I got 2 hours to kill before pin up... Anyone who is considering architecture as a major, if you have interest in design, GO FOR IT ! One of the most rewarding thing's I've done with my life, and I haven't even graduated yet. oh and /claim.
