Is skateboarding still cool?

Maybe I'm just a bit too old to still have my finger on whats popular amongst the youth but am I right in my perception that skateboarding isn't as popular as it was in the early 2000s? I remember in grades 6-10 ish skating was hugeee. Everyone skated and there were skateparks everywhere (legit or not). Now it seems that I don't see as many skaters out and about. Could this be just because my age group doesn't skate as much or is it that when my demographic stopped skating skating took a huge loss? Youngsters tell me is skating still huge?

I used to skate. I was never that good, i could kickflip consistently and do a few grinds... but i wasn't dope by any means. After middle school, i didn't really skate a whole lot more, i don't know why. haha. A lot of kids at my school still skate but they're like the above poster said, the "smoke weed, fuck up kids who skate kinda" i'm chill with all of them and will do a couple tricks every once in a while, but i haven't taken my board out for a solid year, and don't really associate with them. weird, huh?

Well, you mentioned it was popular within grades 6-10. I am sure it is still popular, you just don't see people you know/friends skating or talking about it anymore and you wouldn't hear about it at school. Most kids receive their license towards the end of tenth grade or the beginning of eleventh grade. Kids then drop their boards for cars. Most parents also let their child ride their bike or start skateboarding with their friends on their own in sixth grade. That is most likely why you see/hear less about skateboarding. That and also because people are realizing that skateboarding is not the only action sport, or the only 'cool' action sport, out there.

I still love skating, even though I longboard (not tech short board/whatever skate), and as far as the sport itself, it's bigger than ever. Or at least, it's still really big.

freestyle skiing owes everything to skateboarding. you people are really pissing me off talking sahit about one of my two favorite things. flowing a good skatepark is just as good as shredding deep powder. skateboarding, however, is about 50 times more technical, and you will definitely get hurt because even something as little as a pebble will fuck you up. skating rails helped me learn to ski rails, as strange as that sounds. and the same goes for spinning. fuck haters. i couldn't choose between these sports if my life depended on it.

and fuck you, this is not the 80's, and skateboarding is the second most popular "sport" in the world. not just us privellaged kids can enjoy it.

ANYWAY skating is still "cool" and popular, you probably just dont notice it as much anymore because youre older and past the stage of middle school where everybody wanted to be that one certain cool thing. and lots of people slow way down on skating or stop completely as they get older, thats the case with a lot of my friends

and on the more tech than skiing thing... when it comes to real skiing, (not park) theres a lot of talent going into high level competitors, same as in skating.

sure you could out kickflip me any day, but dont say youre sport is 50 times more technical than my sport, which is the sport that you're on this forum for.

I love watching AM and PRO skating, but back in my high school days when I was a budding skate photographer, I wanted to shoot my fkng eyes out. sitting at a spot, for hours on end before someone landed something was miserable

Skating is still huge on the west coast and in South America. If you come to Cali you will see a bunch of skaters of all types and ages.

you are definately right, it seems like it used to be so much more popular and was something everyone did. even when everyone else stopped, i continued. i think its funny because all the kids who did it when it was "the cool thing" come up to me now and are like why didnt you quit when everyone else did? and i have to explain that i do it because i enjoy it.

Well I'm still in high school and still skateboard and I would say it is somewhat popular probably about 6-7 guys I know in grade 10 do it. I think it dies off once there friends stop doing it or once skaters leave high school. I only really started cause my friends started then I liked it, but hate falling so I just ended up filming and then I got a passion for filming skating and skiing so I got another interest out of it. I would say though skateboarding is still popular.

In whistler most of the skaters are all over 20. All the kids dirt jump/downhill/bmx. Which is fine, keeps the vibe sick at the park

all the kids i skated with in junior high/high school probably havent touched a skateboard in 5 year. i skate ocassionally, not as much as  id like but the spots around here suck. when i was living in salt lake i skated jordan park, cottonwood and sandy a lot. the east coast needs more concrete parks.

seriously, the street skating scene in socal is definitely dying. WAY more longboarders everywhere, not as many street skaters. check out the skate scene in portland, kids shred so hard up there.

If I go over 25 mph my board gets super squirrelly. Over 30 and I'm a goner. So no thanks. I prefer drifting; it's more difficult anyway. Bombing just takes balls and like $500 to get a bombproof (no pun intended) board.

The same can be said for just about all sports and activities. Anyone can pizza down a bunny hill on skis. Same can be said for longboarding, anyone can just roll down a street. To actually learn how to dance and slide and actually carve is much much much more difficult.
