never gone but i love fishing and would really like to get down with some fly fishing. i realize its probably completely different then just sitting around with a rod but any tips for someone whos just starting out?

Spend alot of time on water. Even if you are not catching fish you are getting better at casting. But always remember to have fun.

if you have the space tie a piece of something bright on the end of your line - no hook or anything - and go outside and practice your casting. It is difficult and very frustrating but IMO it is a lot more fun than just regular fishing.

know what you can expect to catch and what type of fly the type of fish your going after likes and what methods, there are completely different casts for moving rivers and for flat ponds. you can probably research methods for different fish online.

Pretty much all the fly shops here in Bozeman host casting/fishing clinics throughout the summer, so I would look into something like that. It's a great way to learn from people who know what they are doing, and to meet people that can take you out and show you around the better spots. If there's a lot of private land or spring creeks around where you live, knowing the right people is invaluable.

yeah most fly shops have clinics for casting, entemology, fly tying etc...

but also just do your reasearch on where your going and what kind of fish your going for what kind of flies work will in that area  etc....

i have this cool smaller practice casting type of fly rod with a string instead of fishing line. i dont know what they are called but they're pretty helpful with form and stuff
