MHSSC vs. Windells

We all obviously know that Windells is superior, but if you all were given the choice between 2 sessions at mhssc or 1 session at Windells, which would you take? And which place would you most likely learn more?

pretty sure you can sign up all the way up until the week before the session your looking at..but better to sign up earlier for sleeping choices.

whats it like in august?
i may be going in late june, or beginning of august. didn't it snow last year in august?

they dont always do this, but late june the public park becomes a hiking park. So we are mostly hiking/ snowmobile towing in our park then. But some summers, if theres enough snow left, once highcascade is done for the summer, they take to public park and make it out of highcascades part of the mountain on the upper, palmer lift so it is a lapable park late august till the end. But once again thats if we are lucky.

at least 15, you pay only for your tickets for the 5 days of skiing that session...250$ You do the dishes, clean the dinning room, unclog beautiful toilets, make the beds at the beginning and end of the week. you have to of gone and paid a full session before doing camper staff. you can do camper staff weeks as much as the camp needs you after that..i did it. its a great deal.

Ha. You won't work more than a week during peak time. Also, I need to be a counselor or kitchen staff next year. C staff isn't nearly a long enough time for me.

You have to be a returning camper, first of all. Second, getting a CIT position your first year working is pretty rare now. You'll probably be camper staff first. But on the off chance you do get it, you will go a week as a normal camper, then probably four as CIT.

Great post SASS! You hit the nail on the head.

We have had that same approach since we opened and we're sticking with it. When the kids are hanging out with their coaches all day, instead of just during instruction, it leads to a tighter bond between teacher and student, a more tight knit "family" feel to camp, and because they know each other better it's easier for campers and coaches to work together to have more fun, be pushed harder, and learn more during their time at camp.

A good coach is a good coach, you don't have to be pro to be one, and there are plenty of pros that aren't good at coaching that are still incredible skiers. Michael Jordan's coaches certainly couldn't match up on him during a game or beat him 1 vs. 1, but they sure knew how to coach and train him to help make him the greatest basketball players the world has ever seen.

Another question: I am currently scrambling for money to go to mhssc, before I waste my time is it too late to sign up for Sesh 8/9? And when would the money be due for those if they would still accept late entries?

What is the average skill level of kids at MHSSC? and how do they divide groups of campers and all that?

The skill level varies each week. I would say the majority works on 7's, flips, cork spins, switchups, 4s. But the reality is the skill level is from beginner to advanced in every group. the groups are usually split by age. 12-14 yro, 15-18 yro, 18-22 yro. But we are not that strict with groups, so if you really want to be with your buddy who is in another group, we wont stop ya.

This thread convinced me to start saving to go to MHSSC haha. It sounds so much fun. I really wanna go for 2 weeks though, but I don't think I will be able to save that much money. I've seen some posts in this thread though about working, and being able to work off some of the money, so what's the deal with that? It doesn't really give any info about it on their website (which needs some work; not exactly the most well put together site)

Camper staff works like this:

you are a full paying camper for 1 week and a non-paying camper the next. During your non-paying week you work in the kitchen primarily washing dishes. They have you do some other housekeeping things as well like changing bedsheets and unclogging toilets. During the work week you still need to pay for your lift tickets and you do not get to participate in normal camper activities like cliff jumping, paintball, etc. Every day you have 2 shifts to fill. There is breakfast, dinner prep, and dinner. Breakfast and dinner prep have set ending times for the most part. Dinner shift however, is very open ended and can run for a very long time into the night since different activity groups all return at different times.

Its all worth it since you get a full day of skiing and its cheaper. I dont know about anyone else, but when I wear myself out a lot I get really sick really fast, which is exactly what happened last time I did this. So if youre like me, just make sure you take it easy skiing and get plenty of sleep so you can wake up in time for breakfast without feeling shitty.

Great post, I think camps like Windell's sell the whole 'Pro Coach' shit way too much. My coach at Woodward last summer was super nice and helpful but he wasn't a 'pro'. Honestly it's cool to see pros but you shouldn't make a decision to go to camp based on whether Tom Wallisch or Henrik Harlaut will be there. (Not that it wouldn't be sort of cool to hang out with them. haha)

You also will have fun and learn a ton where ever you go to summer camp, just stay positive!

depends on how much $ you want to blow, or if you want to have fun or progress more.

momentum- more geared towards fun
mhssc- more geared towards progressing

i am NOT saying you wont progress or have fun at either one, its just more of a general focus

no, but we have government camp. Its mostly race equipment but you can also demo some skis at the K2 House from what I understand.

I would say if at all possible, do a session at windells as a day camper. You basically do everything you would do if you stayed overnight, except you pay like a grand less. i did it this year for session 3, and it was amazing.

MHSSC is doing it right. By far the most roots program with the realest coaches. If you're going to any other camp at Mt Hood, then have fun $pending and dealing with egos.

MHSSC is a sick experience, much more bare-bones and you actually learn a lot because the coaches are interested in helping you, instead of teaching themselves as many coaches are at windells. Also, the atmosphere at mhssc is so chill and you have tons of time to do what you want and have a good time
