Is 171cm too big?

I am 5'4" and still growing, just yesterday i purchased the 171 ON3P jeronimo which i am super excited about.

But as i kept talking with my ski friends i became more and more worried about jumping from a 151 to a 171. and im concerned about having to start all over again in the park... (not being able to spin a lot...ect.)

the jeronimoes do have a rocker so i know that this will help while i am "just skiing" but i dont want to lose all my in air ability.

as of right now i am really undecided so any educated advice or suggestions would be super helpful... thank you

well you already purchased them so there not to much to be undecided about. they will seem huge at first, but you will get used to them

171s shouldn't be too big, I'm 6'0" on 176s.  Jumping 20cm will feel weird for a while, but depending if you can spin comfortably like you say, it shouldn't last for long.  Granted, I wouldn't have recommended 171s for someone 5'4", but if you're still growing more power to you, shouldn't be a big deal.

probably shouldve got a little smaller, but i might have a biased opinion because i hate long skis, im 5'6 and ski on 150s, but will probably get 165s next season

nah dude.  i mighta been a bit taller but when i was younger i went from a 140 or something to a 171 in a season and loved that shit.  you'll progress a buunch.

they will last you at least 2 seasons 20cm is a pretty big jump in size but I went from 151 to 169 took some getting used to but wasnt to bad

i mean... yeah, thats the idea. Im excpecting them to be a little bit rough at the end of this year but im hoping that once i get used to them i will be able to ski on them for a couple of years longer...

i just heard some preety skeptic commentary today and i needed to make sure that i wasnt fucking myself over for the next 2 seasons.

Post this on TGR and see what kind of responses you get. Also look at HH pro model or Simons for that matter all 176 for park skis. My park skis are 181, center mounted skis ski a LOT shorter

No not to big at all im 5' 4" and still growing and 170s fit me not hard to controll at all just takes a little while getting use to turning on larger skis but after one run you'll be fine

Because someone your size over there wouldn't ski park and wouldn't reccomend anything under 180cm, trust me I post over there more than I do here.

Yeah, the boys at ON3P make some quality sticks, but come on...if you're sliding rails and hitting jumps, and getting more than 30 days a year, there's no shot those things will hold up for 3 years.

If you don't thrash the edges or fuck up the bases, they're going to lose camber and/or their pop.

Do kids expect to get 3 years out of a pair of park skis? All I'm saying is that I don't want to see you making a thread about how shitty ON3Ps are if they're spent by the end of next year.

You'll be fine man... it'll take a day or two of shredding to get comfortable to the switch, and once you do you'll love it and not want to go back to your old skis. I don't remember if you said you were getting them center mounted or not, but I would definitely recommend it because they are on the larger side and a center mount will make them feel smaller, but with a lot of control still. In short, longer skis are dope.

seriously 171 wouldnt be too long if you were a midget with inward growing legs. I've been riding 180+ park skis since I was 5'8 and wouldn't have it any other way

don't listen to people who are riding short sticks, its cause they suck and can't handle the immensity of long objects

I don't ski a ton of park, mostly big mtn stuff but I do hit rails and jumps and my Volkl Karmas have 5 years and over 300 days on them and they're still going strong. Camber is still intact, edges are still intact (but dull), and they still have pop.

haha im with you, and no thats not what i meant... but its not like im some spoiled brat whos parents buy all my shit, so im paying for my skis and i dont want to pay $550 on quality skis that i cant control... thats all, but m gonna try and ski them for the next 2 seasons.. and my invaders will continue to be my jib/rock skis

on3p mesures there skis flush with the entire ski...so the mesurement includes the curve of the ski.

so im going to guess its more towords the high 160's...also i hear the skis are pretty damn light=low swing weight

i went from a 151 to a 166 and i actually didnt notice an extreme difference. if you're a good skier you'll make it work and also they'll fit you better anyways.

Big skis are better once you get used to them. You will be fine. I 4'11 and I am riding a 166

Oh, ok, I see.

Right on. I think you made a great choice...it's important to support small companies, and they're just an incredible and passionate group of guys over there.

Don't sweat the length, I think you'll appreciate the added stability. And, as mentioned, the rocker and center mounting will guarantee that they won't ski super long. The swing weight (and I'd imagine the turning radius) will be pretty different and spinning will take an adjustment, but I think the pros will definitely outweigh the cons.

Enjoy those bad boys, and take care of 'em.

thread creator 171s might take some time to get used to. but once you get used to a bigger ski, you will probably love them.

i should mention...im also 5' 3 or 4ish and i got 171 j-mos.

i talked to scott about it aswelll as other people that have experience with the ski...they assure ill be fine.

We measure our skis tip to tip, true length, not along the surface of the ski.

If you take a tape and put one end on the tail and run it straight to the tip, holding it off the surface of the ski, it will measure 171cm.

I'd expect a bit of weight to be shed next year, but I wouldnt say out skis are amazingly light, they're pretty much middle of the road next to the competition. Bamboo cores are a great material, but we're planning to incorporate a few things next year to make them a bit thinner and lighter.

As for how they will ski, in the 171 J-mo you have about 95cm of ski touching the snow, with a bit more engaging when you're on edge. This compared to 142cm of ski in our similarly sized 171 Blue Steele. Its not going to feel like you're center mounted on a freight train, the rocker will make the ski a little easier to handle, even taking into consideration its slightly wider width.

I'd say its a good pick, but hey, I'm biased. And yes, we always do returns, refunds and warranties, so dont feel like the pressures on or anything. Scott and I are always available via phone or PM on NS, give us a shout if you've got any concerns, ever.

As rowen said above, we measure final not flat length.

Most companies measure the length by measuring the base material length when it is totally flat, without any curve.

I HATE this because you end up with a ski that are 1) shorter than their listed length and 2) with all sorts of variance between companies.

Measure our skis tip to tail, and that is the listed length.

As such, it will be a bit longer than most companies.

As for the step to a 171cm, they will seem a lot bigger, but you will have vastly improved float and stability and they are rockered, so the increase in length won't be as noticeable as you think.  With a center mount and you will be surprised how easy they swing around. 

When actually skiing, too, I fully expect to get a PM after your first week on them talking about how much more stable and enjoyable they are bombing down the mountain!

I was in the same exact position last year. 151 Invaders to 169 Hellbents. They have rocker, so they ski much shorter. You will be fine as long as you're a fairly strong skier. I hardly noticed, except for the rocker, which I loved. I also bought 171 Chronics when I was 5'5, and they are great. Dont worry about it, you made the right decision.

meaning put me on a pair of 164s and they look/are a whole hell of a lot different for me than they are for you.

my shortest skis are some 160CM slalom skis and even those if i had the money would upgrade to some 165s. but alas ive been skiing those for awhile now and wasnt nearly as big as i am today when i bought them.
