Yeah, definitely work on general skiing skill, it definitely makes you look better in the park and allows you to experience a lot more stuff skiing.
Props on trying it though, ALWAYS wear a helmet when skiing. Not worth the risk. At least that's my philosophy. You're free to do what you like.
I find with backflips its generally the first one that screws you over. Next time, try to take off, then look at the horizon for a split second, then flip. You will land perfectly if you do it right.
