Logic or Ableton Live

So right now I have the torq xponent. I like it a lot, but I also want to get into some producing. Should I go logic or the ableton route. If I get Ableton should I use it for djing also or stick with my torq? In addition, will a mackbook pro run logic pretty well? Which DAW do you guys like better and why?

I've read up on the xponent because i wanted one myself. It looks like the native Torq application is best with the xponent. for producing i would get both - but you could probably start with Ableton.

Ya ive tried other dj software such as traktor and some serato stuff. I like torq the best. Traktor probably offers more flexiibility in a set, but torq is just straightforward and fun.

I prefer Ableton.

The versatility of this DAW is unmatched, the possibilities are endless. I use it everyday and still find new ways to tweak or change my sound, plus its ability to be used as a live application is a valuable asset, performing with the same program you use for production is a really awesome feeling, it makes the software seem more personal and unique. In terms of production the only other DAW that comes close, in my experience at least, is reason, but the ability to jump into ableton easier gives you more of an edge as you get to know the software much better and faster than other programs.

It's strange to compare these two.

If you wanna play live music and trigger samples, get ableton.

If you wanna record music and learn how to produce, get logic.

I've run both on my mbp. At the same time. I'm yet to find a program that doesn't run how it's supposed to on my comp.

My friend runs logic on his 2008 base level macbook.

From the videos and such that I have seen ableton live doesnt seem very "live" if you know what I mean. It seems like you have to have your set completley planned out. It just doesnt seem as flexible or spontanous as using more traditional two platter controller. I am not experienced with ableton at all so please tell me if im wrong.

Thats true for the most part, but what sets live apart from a program like traktor etc. is the level of technicality and customization. Sure you may have to plan your set out, but the options on how you play your set, how you mix it, how the whole performance pans out is a much broader definition then simply, load track, mix track, repeat.

Its two different ways of performing which one you prefer depends totally on how you play.

So if I decide to get ableton what controllers do you reccomend. I think I might get an Axiom 49 for the producing side of things, but for live sets which controller or mixer do you like?

I would recommend an APC40. But if you already have some sort of midi controller with knobs and faders on it, check out the Novation launchpad to compliment the controller you already own.

I have an axiom 25. well worth the money, the thing is solid. Highly recommend. I'm producing in Logic but never used ableton so i can compare.

the apc40 is worth every penny you have complete control over ableton its like having ableton physically at your fingertips rather than having it trapped under your computer screen.  i got the apc in October and it was the best investment every...that and studio monitors, those are two very good investments

but of course, i am down for Ableton if you havent gathered that by my APC praise session.

Ive got the axiom 25 and run ableton with the apc40. Its such a sick setup. I'm not gona recommend it over other things cos i havnt tried everything, but it definitely does everything and much more than i need to. I also use serato for djing and soon when the serato/ableton collab is released, things are gona get really fun.
