I think they meant that they're that high up, and out in the open air, as opposed to inside a space shuttle.

I wonder how Felix will freefall this time. Back when Joe attempted it in the 60s he had to freefall in a reclined sitting position with his back towards the Earth, I think because of all the equipment on his back. Wonder if they will do the same thing this time.

Just a little physics question...

Wouldnt the speed of sound be different in the upper stratosphere?

Keep in mind, the sound barrier is 768mph AT SEA LEVEL.

Yeah, it's been a couple years since I took physics, but I think you're right. The lower density of the air lowers the speed of sound because the pressure waves take more time to pass through the increased amount of space between particles. I think.

Well that and you need to take in account the temperature at that altitude which would be higher since the upper stratosphere gets heated by the UV rays of the sun.

So in essence the Speed of sound would be higher in the upper stratosphere than closer to earth. Because (if i remember correctly) sound speed depends on temperature. However, when you pass lower below the stratosphere the air will be cooled and the temp would go back down, but you would also start to slow down and reach terminal velocity.

According to the internets the speed of sound is dependent only on gas temperature and independent of pressure or density which seems kind of odd.  Does anybody know what speed he is trying to hit at what altitude?

Probably a little but not enough that he's going to burst into flames. He's freefalling from the lower part of our atmosphere, not performing reentry.
