I have Mono.

Hey guys.  I found out about 3 weeks ago that I have mono.  I started feeling the symptoms about a month ago.

When you have mono your spleen can rupture very easily which can be fatal.  My doctor said no riding for THREE MONTHS.  Even if I feel better.  This means I am not allowed to snowboard until December 23rd.  I am freaking out.  I have already missed out on a ton of preseason rail jams and such.  How long should I realistically wait to ride?  I don't think I can wait until almost January.

Any experience?  Have your doctors told you otherwise?  I'm just super bummed and I feel terrible.  I don't think I can wait that long without mentally snapping.

Oh god you should be freaking out right now. Mono is one of the deadliest diseases out there now, right next to Swine flu and SARS.

Yeah, listen to your doctor. My boyfriend had mono this summer, and I saw how much it sucked for him. But he did go out and do physical stuff before he was supposed to and now he still randomly gets super tired/other symptoms of mono.

Be careful, listen to your doctor, and sit out the rail jams. There will be others

i have mono as we speak. ive had it for two weeks now, but im finally feeling well enough to go to school on monday. i went to the doctor and they told me the same thing about the spleen, but i dont think you'll need to wait three months. once your symptoms go away, wait about a week and go see your doctor again. have them check your spleen and liver to see if theyre swollen at all. you should be fine.

and btw, the thing that got rid of all my symptoms was prednisone. ask your doctor for some i guess.

also btw, did you get tonsilitis from the mono? i did. it SUCKS. but the prednisone helps, along with 600mg of ibuprofen every 4-6 hours.

good luck dude, and id like to hear your thoughts on the matter.

i had chronic mono for months upon months. its really wise to listen to the docs, i had to seem mine a bunch of times and each time she'd feel my spleen and tell me if i could shred or not.

try busting your spleen last march....then doing it again this week and possibly missing the ENTIRE season.  then you'll be in my buddy's position.  wait the full 3 months and let it heal properly

Its not worth it. I was in and out of the hospital for 3 months, lost 60 pounds, almost died, ruptured my spleen, laid in bed for a month, and thought about sucide because of mono.

i was out of school for a month and a half because mono. i slept 90% of the day. slept and ate is pretty much all i did. i lost 25 lbs that month and a half and i was hospitalized because of that. it definitely sucks. i remember walking up my staircase and literally becoming out of breath and to the point where i needed to sleep.

Dude, mono sucks. I have had it 3 times. But if you want to get on the hills early there is a way. Talk to your Dr. and get a ultrasound done. They will do the ultrasound to check to see if your spleen is still enlarged But you should defiantly let your DR know that your planing on doing a rail jam and think of the risks that your taking. But waiting until december isnt all that bad. I wont be skiing until at least january, if not febuary.

If I get an ultrasound done would I instantly be cleared to ride again?

My doctor is pretty set on the standard medical suggestion of waiting 3 months.  I want a different opinion.  He felt for enlargement in my spleen and said that it wasn't enlarges, but he still told me to sit out on everything.  I have missed about 6 days of riding so far this fall and I can't take it anymore.

my shit isnt enlarged either, but i think it can happen fairly suddenly.

...honestly if i were you, id just say fuck it and do it. sorry if thats horrible advice.

The hill I ski at doesn't even open until after christmas, so December 23 doesn't sound so bad. I think you should listen to your doctor and find soemthing productive to do in the meantime that will make it so you can ride more when you finally can.

I have mono/tonsilitus right now too, its brutal. I had to quit my team cause of the whole contact sports thing...
the only side effects so far though are being tired, a headache and becoming awesome at skate 2...

hahahha well actually on a medical website it siad the symtoms of HIV can be mistaken for mono so yeah I believed you.
