Sooo shit didnt work out.. but now i have a year to kill..

So guys, if you havent already heard, I was denied my loan shit just like 2 days before i would have driven up to MT for school... it sucks, but its the situation.

However, now i'm here, sitting with a year to basically kill. I cant get into a school in California for a year - the budget is shitty, and even if I do get in next fall, who knows if i will get into the program, or even if I'll be able to get in PERIOD.

So, I'm thinking, why dont I just MOVE up to Mt, or something, and establish legit residency and such right? Take maybe one class or something, just to keep the ball rolling, and get a job, and have fun until i'm established as a resident.

So my question is to you, people of the 4th largest land mass in the country, do you have any ideas of how to fix me up with a situation like this? Know of anyone looking for a roomie off campus or something... in a place where I might be able to take a class or two?

Any ideas for this are certainly welcome...

I'll need a new roomie for sure in december.

housing in missoula is cheap, but if you really want a good year of skiing at a cheap price, you might try big mtn for a season. I'd do it but i can't live in kalispell besides the skiing.

housing in missoula is easy to find for under 300 a month.

and my instate tuition for 15 credits was 2700. i was stoked.

Hit up Craig's list. There are a ton of kids around Bozeman that need roomies to help pay the rent. Not to mention almost everyone in Bozeman shreds.

ya depends on where u wanna live, but if you go either to bozeman or missoula there are alot of people who are looking for roomies, it shouldnt be hard if you have the money, hit up either craigslist or go to the schools advertisement board where peeps post up things like rooms for rent or even look in the newspapers

Im planning on living in wfish again this winter and it seems like there are usually people up there who are looking for roomies too and you could take a class at the community college in kalispell, its called Flathead Valley community college.

come to Bozeman. best skiing in MT for sure. go to MSU and take a few classes and then gain your residency.

kalispell is way cheaper than bozeman, there are more legit skiers per capita there than anywhere, (per capita you bozeman kids, some of the skiers in bozeman shred so hard it's not actually possible to fathom,) and all of them shred everything really hard. And the snow there is insane.

are there a good bunch of legit ski shops in kalispell? Having 5 years of ski shop work on my resume, i'd probably try to get a job at one ASAP...

kalispell is a dope town and the lake is super fun, but skiing there isn't comparable to Big Sky/Moonlight and Bridger. Only go to Kalispell if your happy skiing big mtn all day everyday (the park isn't anything special).

If you end up in Bozeman, let me know. You will probably be able to get a job at either Chalet or Round House. pm me if you have any q's

Or you could just be a real ski bum and be a lifty in kalispell. That's the only legit way to go.

Talk to the guys at "The White Room" in Whitefish
or at Sportsmans Ski house in Whitefish or Kalispell (two diff locations

Those are about the only legit shops that I know of that may be hiring people

if you wanna be a lifte work at the YC me and a bunch of my friends have worked there for awhile and its the shit, good hourly pay paid ski breaks and they pay for your season pass, bozeman/bigsky is the best hands down.

A liftie would certainly be a huge downgrade from working in a shop... If that was my only option, i'd just say fuck it and keep my job here.

So yeah.. I'm going to have to give some of these shops calls and see whos hiring, what positions are available... and severely contemplate my situation here... the pros so far heavily outweigh all the cons.

I know you're from cali, and a gnarly park skier, but all the kids on here saying that you shouldn't go somewhere because the park sucks are forgetting one thing, they live in montana. The parks all suck compared to colorado, utah, and california.

So if park is a primary, re-think your situation. If you want to get sick and bring your park skills to the rest of the mountain (which I'm 100% sure you can), this is the place to do it. you'll be forced into getting creative, which isn't a bad thing. Big mtn's park is plenty legit. it get's large. but I can't think of a single reason to ski park in bozeman when there are a million miles of back country. or bridger.

Like I said, 5 years of experience could probably get you a job at my shop. I can talk to my boss about it today. That's no guarantee though because no one has seen you yet though right? I moved here out of the blue not knowing any one, and had a shop job in 3 days. you just kinda have to roll the dice.

I suggest getting your stuff in order, a fatter pair of skis, a handle of whiskey, and head this way. if you want residency, it won't be in effect until next semester unless you get here next week. so either get here now, or take a lil time, and get here before the snow flies. early season is usually good here, mid season turns into park skiing for some and hiking for snow for others, and the end of the season just gets stupid.

thats about the best advice I got.

Haha. Homie, I've thought this through pretty freaking well...

I'm from Cali, but I'm no 'gnarly park skier'. Last year was my first year where I kinda really started messing about in it a lot, because I was almost always at kirkwood and squaw before that - kirkwood is known for steeps and epic pow. They have a park, but its mostly just to screw around in - squaw does have a sick park no lie.. but unless its a shitty ass snow day, i'll never go into the park, because squaw's just too epic most of the time. I already have all the equipment I need for killin gnarly BC and such.. and the jameson's always flowin in my house... I just need to make the move.

alright, im gonna try and not be a jerk cause i have nothing against Big Mtn.

but that pic is with a fisheye and that jump was built late season. I dont think its correct to say Big Mtn has a legit park.

Everyone in MT knows the closest we get to a legit park is Big Sky or Moonlight.

not trying to create hate here but i definitely disagree. That is the biggest jump ive hit ever. Dave was throwing down on it. There park had plenty of other fun features. Were you there last year ever?

I dont know man.. I've seen some photos of the fishbowl park up there at Big Mtn, and it looks easily comparable to some of the parks in Tahoe. The jumps might not be the most insanely huge, but then again, I'm not all that much into jumping really... so personally that doesnt matter.

I'd compare Big Mtn's park to that of Sugar Bowl up in Tahoe.

Just to clear up a few things, to say Big Mtn. skiing isn't even comparable to Big Sky/Moonlight and Bridger is just wrong. You can prefer the bozeman mountains but to put them in a higher league than big mtn doesn't make sense. If anything, I would say that Big Mtn>bozeman mountains, but i really don't want to turn this thread into a debate, just trying to keep things in perspective for the thread creator.

Furthermore, even though the park crew at Big Mtn. doesn't always know what they're doin, it's pretty damn good for montana, definitely in the same league as big sky/moonlight

So I'm in the process of e-mailing lots of wildlife people at U of M right now and have the full support of my mom..... so the possibility of me heading out there for the second half of winter/spring is looking better and better.

I'm just trying to decide which would be most beneficial.... U of M or MSU.

Have you been to Big Mountain? You're giving out incorrect information.

Big Mountain is amazing. Pow, trees and the jumps there last year were better than any of Bozeman's three mountains.

ok, im not trying to start a huge debate over which resort in MT is best. that would be like comparing apples and oranges. I was simply trying to explain to Sean that Big Sky/Moonlight would be the best place to set up shop. I also assumed he was a park skier (might be incorrect).

In regards to everyone's opinion that Big Mtn had a more legit park, i respectfully disagree. That decent sized jump was built late season (not open for the majority of the year). Other than that, they have a few rails/boxes, nothing special. In terms of actual skiing, im not denying the fact that it is awesome. Great steeps/pow and all around fun.

but to say better than Big Sky or Moonlight! thats ignorant. Roughly 1 skier per acre. 3812 acres and 4350 vertical ft at Big Sky alone. Almost double with the Lone Peak pass. Over 50 hits/jibs/jumps at both.

Come on, be real.

We might just have to agree to disagree here, on most of these points actually.

Haha and actually I just thought of something "special" at Big Mountain's park. They had these two new stupid features this year, probably the worst investments I've ever seen: the Shark Fin (oh sweet!) and the whatchamacallit scketchy box wavy thing (awesome!) These were both laughable, but that is beside the point.

For the original poster, my advice would be to live in bozeman because the skiing is great and the social scene/shop job stuff would be a lot better.

i don't really think that moonlight should be in this debate in the first place.. other than the rails that they have, the mountain is not fun to ski at all, and since most college students cant afford a lone peak pass, it's not much help there either. also, big mtn doesnt seem to be any more crowded at all than big sky, sometimes it feels less crowded, so if you're basing quality of the mountain on that, theres not much of a difference. i will definitely agree that bigsky had a better park overall, since they are better at maintaining it and have more bigger features, but big mountain definitely did have the best jump.

but yeah, i would say that you should probably live in the bozeman area.. on top of there being more mountains to choose from, there is a lot more of a younger crowd here because of the university.. it would be a lot harder to meet people and make friends up in the flathead area than here in bozeman.

but just know this... anything I get in Montana, is going to be better/cheaper/powderier/closer than any mountain is to any school in California. Sacramento is the closest school to any of the legit places in tahoe, and its still 1.5 hours from any of them... and then when/if there IS a big dump with powder, the roads close, and nobody but the locals living in tahoe get to ski it anyway unless you're REALLY persistant - which requires time that no students have. lol. This is why places like Boreal and Northstar are known for their parks... because there are just so many days where theres no pow to ski (unless youre at kirkwood, alpine, or squaw especially) and those places are small, flat and low elevation (for tahoe anyway). And unfortunately, the flow of those two parks absolutely sucks because of all the snowboard oriented jibs and things. The Alpine and Squaw parks are much better for skiers - unfortunately the mountains are too good half the time to even give a shit about the park. This is why i'm not the 'gnarly park skier' i was percieved to be haha. I like it, but its not the huge thing for me.

Aside from that, I kinda know what I'm getting into up there as far as the skiing is concearned. I've already skied at many of the aformentioned areas (Big Mtn AND Bigsky as well as Discovery... found all of them to be just epic sweetness). To be honest, Bigsky was the sickest, mostly because it was just flat out BIG and in some places Tahoe - steep...  I honestly didnt get to check out Big Mountain as much (only one day there compared to 3 at Sky) so its probably not a fair comparison,. anyways... both UM and MSU would both be rockin ass fits for me when it comes to good skiing while being in school... both would be better than Sacramento for me, and both have kickass film production programs... which is awesome for montana.

also... california is in a terrible budget crunch and montana is a little more stable right now... so its a little more appealing in that sense too.

If you want to do film, you need to go to MSU. I'm a junior in MSU's program and I love it. I think UM is digital video production with more of an emphasis on television - but I'm not one hundred percent sure. MSU's program is hands on from day one.

UM's is based out of its media arts program, and really emphisizes editing and production techniques.

Theyre both awesome, and i wish more states had programs like UM and MSU...

At first, I was leaning towards MSU for the close proximity to skiing. I talked to a professor who went to grad school at U of M, though, and he did nothing but rave about it. In all seriousness... I'm going for the academic program and field work opportunities so UM it is. I'll be applying soon and figuring out my transcript/credit transfer for the spring semester if all goes well.

i'm also in the process of moving to bozeman to school, but like you i will wait to actually go to school because i want instate.  but here is the thing, i don't really recomend taking any classes at all for the first year because the school will review your living situation before they accept you as a instate student, and if they think you moved there just to go to school then they will make you pay out of state tuition.  supposedly this actually happened to a friend of a friend of mine.

honestly bigsky's park was kind of a let down this year. nothin but down rails two decent jumps. as far as moonlight they have sick ass rails. all around bigmtn was better than bigsky last year.

Dude in the big park there was ONLY down rails. Eventually they added the DFD, which is still a down rail.
