Convincing Your Parents To Give You a Debit Card

Basically I NEED a debit card for many reasons and my parents wont let me. I have a job which gives me more than enough money that i need at any one time. I also have a checking account in which my paychecks go directly towards, plus i have an ATM card. By the way i just turned 17.

I dont see why my parents wont let me have a debit card. When you look at it and ATM and debit card are pretty much the same. They extract cash from my checking account, except the debit allows me to do it electronically, big difference right? They say i cant have one on the grounds that ill spend too much and go over my account. However im really good with money and my account only gets bigger every month, never dwindles.

The only reason why i feel its necessary to have a debit card is so i dont have to constantly go to the ATM and withdrawal large amounts of cash consistantly. And i dont like having $100+ in my wallet at any time or even 30, even if i may be making an expensive purchase.

Finally i think the debit card allows me to make online purchases which is where i do most of my spending anyhow, and you cant do that with an ATM. So i always am constantly going to my parents to buy it online which they never get around to.

Thats all the details and maybe some ranting, Ive tried to convince my parents but they always say no. So NS, how about some witty ideas on getting me set up with a debit card so i can buy some T Shirts and Stickers from the NS Store. HELP!!

if you were really responsible enough to have a debit card, and you really had a need, then your parents wouldn't say no.

shit thats harsh. im 15 and i have 1.

just try telling them your getting older and more independant and that your life will be alot easier when buying books and study guides for college.

cuz then your more likely to spend money, and then your going to waste your paychecks? i mean that could be one of their views.

i got a credit card when i went to NZ because it was MUCH easier, but it was the same number as my parents account. and i dont think i've used it since (although i dont drive yet and shit so like i have my parents to pay if i need).
But at your age, you should have a credit card (or debit? i guess...) for gas and other things like that, thats how many parents did it with me and my brothers

I dont see how having money in hand and having money on a card is different. You can spend it either way, having a card doesnt make you spend more. I got one because I had way to much cash in my wallet, which is definitely unsafe and just pointless to have. The card makes it alot easier, tell them that. And they also can put limits on your card. Im only allowed to spend 500 dollars a week, max, it will cut itself off if you try to go past. I also have a daily spending limit. It's pretty easy to control and also keeping track is easy.

Im pretty sure you cant buy online with a debit card though. Its not safe giving your debit card pin number away either.

hahaha I could see a credit card, but a debit card? what the fuck, its your money that you earn, they should have almost no say whatsoever on how you spend it. you don't tell them how to spend the money that they earn, therefore they shouldn't either.

If it was money THEY were giving you, then it would be reasonable.

nvm, i forgot they made ATM specific cards. but you're parents are fools to think you'll overdraft if you have a constant stream of income.

Nah it doesn't work like that with teen accounts. I just got one only because my mom is on the account. You can't get a debit card without your parents being on the account

Yeah, I am kinda in the same situation. It would just be nicer to have so I could INVEST in cool things off NS and other sites and in town without having to drag cash everywhere or have momma or daddy break out the credit card. I am REALLY good with money too and hardly ever spend it.

when i got my debit card all i had to do was cruise into my bank and say hello i would like a debit card, they signed me up i signed the card and some papers and i was good to go. No parents needed im 16 btw

It's pretty weak that you parents won't let you get one especially since they think ot's a responsibilty issue. My dad is paranoid about identity theft and people stealing your pin and he pays cash everywhere and gets pissed off when I use my debit at McD's and shit.

But like people said if you parents want that control then tell them they can probaly set limits and with statements you see exactly what your buying. As far as the useing it for paypal i think thats a no go. If I remember you can set it up to use your bank/debit card but you have to be 18 to have an account.

this.  At least at Wells Fargo, they let me make changes to my accounts, and they just gave me something to bring to my rents to sign, but I never did it and they never said anything.  Or I think you can open your own account, you might have to be 18 tho.  Then you could close your old one and do what you want.

well you can always just buy amex gift cards with lots of money on them.
that basic acts like a credit and debit card. but when you pay, its considered a credit card
this also solves the online shopping thing!

I didn't read the whole thread so someone else may have said this, but you can't "go over" with a debit card, you only have access to how much cash is in your account. It's not like a credit card where you can end up in debt, really there is no down side to having a debit card.

^ What amo said. Do you mean Visa Check Card when you say debit card? A check card is the best possible thing for someone your age. It allows you to charge as credit with no risk of going over your balances. It will help you learn to manage credit and create a credit history for you. That will help you get better rates on loans and credit cards, in the future, when you go off to college. The longer you maintain a credit history with a single institution, the higher your credit score.

Look at it this way. You're going to go to college, have access to 10,000 different credit cards and be bombarded by other college kids selling them as fundraisers. Chances are, if you don't understand credit, you'll get a card and go way out of control. I've seen it happen to half my friends. The result is that most of them are thousands of dollars in debt. Two of them left school around $12k and can't get a good interest rate for anything. Their credit is shot.

Your parents don't care about the spending too much. Talk to them about what I wrote about and come up with a compromise. Have a savings and a checking account. Put X% of your paycheck in savings and Y% in the checking account linked to the check card. Make sure the card does not have overdraw prevention (e.g. you overdraw on checking, so it pulls from savings). If you can't go over your checking limit and can charge things as a credit card without going over the amount of money in your checking account, this is the safest way for you to learn about credit.

american moneys system so is strange. shouldnt you be able to gt a debit card on your own? debit cards do make more sense. and yeah just open a taxe free savings account if possible. i feel at your age you should be able to do your own banking...i think i did...but i am canadian, so i dont know

also, if you dont have cash back you cant go into overdraft.

this may sound stupid but can't you just get one? do you need parental permish? not trying to be sarcastic or anything like that--it was a legit question. i couldn't live without mine even tho i only use it for emergencies...credit cards are where it's at.

speaking of which...
why don't you get a credit card? you will establish credit and if you're as responsible as you say you are it shouldn't be a problem. just set a low limit like $500 and pay on time.

im guessing the rules vary by state....maybe you should tell us where u live and what bank youre with and then maybe someone can surf the web for some info, otherwise look into the bank yourself for student bank cards or whatever or switch banks.
