What fabric do you use when your making your hoodies? Also what's cheapest because this summer I want to make one with my grandma and she and I don't have a lot of money to use.

I use 76%cotton and 24% polyester notexactly cheap but awesome
think it was like $18/meter Canadian

holy crap that's expensive. The store I've gone to had a very limited selection of sweatshirt material and it was super expensive like that. I used fleece for both of mine. works just fine. i can get it for like 5 bucks a yard too.

how much total fabric do you usually use (counting different types of designs)?  I've just scimmed through the original thread so i could just look back there if it's in there.  I'm interested in making one now.

i bought 2 meters of blue and 1 meter of red for my hoodie and i think i have like enough material to make another hoodie so you don't need that much...

okay cool, and i'm not gonna make mine so tall anyways.  More like in the large-XL jiberish sizing range.  Prob only need a meter total then.  Thanks.  anybody have a time estimate of how long it took for their first one?

i must be terrible at this. it takes me like 4 yards of fabric and it takes me like a day of pretty solid work to finish one now that i have a pattern made.

a meter might be too little.... well if you have your own pattern you can measure i freestyled it but i tried to waste minimal amount of fabric so

i used 4 yars i fucked up the sleeves once and had to re cut new ones and wasted some fabric but for my next hoodie i will stil buy no less the 3 yards cuz i used basicly one whole yard on the chest and i didnt have enough scraps left from that o make a hood or any sleves.
3 should do you just fine.
my fabric was 60/40 poly/cotton and was about 12 a yard so not cheap but not murder.
another thing is that at my store colors were more expensive so i used all white and died pieces i wanted blue and saved me about 20 bucks.
but i hear the colors might run when i wash the final product i hope they dont cuz i already washed individually but o well its my first one and dont have a paternt of anysort and it looks so sick right now

i did and i washed what i died but typicly you dont dye something then sew it to somthing you didnt die so even the slightest bleed will show on the white
im crossing my fingers though so well see

I was thinking of making some thinner hoodies for now since it's summer, so kinda like t shirt material. I guess I just buy cotton right? I also don't have a sewing machine, so this should be easier to hand sew right?

so i was thinking. fabric is expensive. even just tshirt fabric for a summer hoodie is like 10 bucks a yard or something ridic like that.

however, a 4xlt tall tee at walmart is $6. and there's at least 2 yards of fabric in that, maybe more. plus it already has a collar and (short) sleeves. so you could probably hack together a pretty decent looking hoodie from about 1.5 tall tees. for an average cost of like $9.

that's way better than like $30 to buy the fabric.

but we're taliking about making hoodies not tees.... hahahaha
i know that it is easier and cheaper to buy a tee but hoodies are much more expensive and cheaper to mkae yourself if you waste minimal amount of fabric and make multiple hoodies

Yeah, I know. The fabricland near me has sweater material 50% off, so I'm gonna grab some and start making my hoodie and the tutorial for it ASAP.

i priced out fabric to make a hoodie. even using a pretty conservative estimate for the amount of fabric i would need it was going to cost me more money to make a hoodie than to buy one if i used sweatshirt fabric. even buying tshirt weight fabric (which would have been acceptable to use as a summer hoodie) to make the hoodie would work out to about the same price as buying one.

what i'm suggesting is using a tshirt to make a hoodie. take the tee shirt, cut it up, and sew it into a hoodie. as an added bonus you don't necessarly have to scrap the entire form of the t. you could cut some of the length off the tall t (or use a second t) and use it to make the sleeves and hood.

and the point of making your own isnt necesarily to save money.
its to be unique and creative and they dont really make cool tall hoodies.
and i made mine (with zipper and puckets AND liner)
more about 70 bucks
cheaper then jiberish and baller as fuck and warm to
but yeah about the t shirt shit you may as well buy a tall t long sleve..
and add a hood

ya... buddy i don't know how much fabric yur buying....
i bought really comfortable and warm fabric like really nice and i used 40 dollors.....
this is like 3 times cheaper then a jiberish hoodie and u have the freedom of making it however u like

haha, i don't see why you guys think there's a difference between buying a yard of fabric from johanns or cutting up a cheap tshirt to get a yard of fabric. it's the same stuff people.

ill break the difference down for you.
1. t-shirts are made out of fabric that is primarily cotton and is very thin.
2. cotton is very water absorbent so when skiing it will soak up all the melting snow and you WILL get soaked. that why we go to the fabric store and buy 60 40 cotton pollyester. its soft on one side and a fine semi water resistant shell on the other (the outside, side)
3. longsleeve tall tess in just about every color imaginable are not hard to get. tall hoodie on the other hand are. thats why we make our own hoodies here in the homeade hoodie cult.
4. you say for a "summer" hoodie. well for me at least, if its summer and i get cold im going to grab one of my many oakely quicksilver or nike hoodies in a size large. these are cheap stylish and fit like any old hoodie. and if i feel the need for only i light layer ill grab i fucking long sleeve T

grab a hoodie and grab a T and if you cant feel the difference then you must have severe nerve damage and should seek a doctors help imediatly

and mayorwest, thanks for taking the time to write all that.
i understand lightweight cotton isn't the same as a nice poly blend. and i understand it's not great for skiing.

and i'm glad you're content with your plain old hoodies, but surely you can understand why someone might want to rep a sick homemade hoodie in the summer too. especially for myself, at 6'2 and rather skinny, most 'regular' hoodies don't fit me well. they always end up way to short in the body and sleeves after they're washed a couple times.

so i might want a sick looking, unique hoodie, even if it's just for summer. and if i'm going to make one i might as well make it as cheaply as possible. so perhaps you can understand why i mentioned an idea for getting cheap, lightweight fabric.

im 6'2" and not fat as well...
i would consider my hoodies to be vary plain but o well.
i find that a hoody made with the stock hoody material is just fine for summer nights add a ziper and open it up and you can get a nice breez in there.
im not saying you shouldnt do it im just say its gunna look like a tall t with a hood. its gunna fit and feel like a longsleev tall t wich is exactly what it will be.
by all means do it im not stopping you.
i just feel that if your gunna make a hoody make a hoody.
if your gunna make a shirt.. make a shirt/with a hood

I was at JoAnnes for about an hour, and they only had a few bolts  of 60-40 and it was really really thin.  Is that what everyone has been using? or is there something that has a bit more weight to it floating around out there somewhere?

thats what i used for mine and it turned out great.
to add a bit of wieght i bout like basketball short material and lined my hoody with that.
but you will be surprised how heavy it acutally is when all sewed together
