For this assignment I chose to review "The Pease Ballad of John Lennon and Yoko Ono" at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal. The reason why IU shode to go see the exhibibtion was not only to write a review for class, but also out of curiouslity and the fact that I enjoy listening to the Beatles. The theme of the exjibibtion is obviously peace. During the late sixties and early seventies, Hohn and Yoko played major roles in what was known as the hippy movement. Every display revolves around a cerain aspect of peace, even the entrance fee and bag check are free. something that Yoko personnally insisted. The goal being that Lennon and Okos' meddage will be spread to as many people as possible since admission is free. This is an effective tactic to lure people in because i saw numerous elementary school groups along with many other people who probably wouldn't even have considered the exhibition if it were not for the free admition.
Upon entering the gallery there are two walls. The left dieplays Yoko Ono's life while the right wall shows John's. Since meeting in 1966, the couple promoted peace in every one of their works. They also used a lot of sumbolism in their art. One example of this was their conceptual art in the following woom which consisted of planting two acorns next to each other and placing benches along side for viewers to watch grow. On the ground next to the acorns was a plaque that read: John - by Yoko Ono       Yoko - by John Lennon
One acorn faces east while the other faces west. This was to symbolise both sides of their love for each other. The third room had a bed in the middle. At first glance it seems strange but after reading the captions on the walls everything starts to make sence. The recording of the song " Give Peace a chance" was recorded in the Queen Elizabeth hotel in Montral. John and Yoko vowed not to step out of their bed until the world "gave peace a chance." And, impressively, people everywhere were witnessed singing the chorus in the streets even before it was released to the public. This is an excellent example as to how the couple successfully put out a message to the world with the help of their fame. An interesting reference to the famous "Bed-in" that I've notices recently is in the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchette. At one point in the movie they are said to be pracitaclly living on their mattress. The setting is in the seixties during the hippy movement made obvious to the way they are dressed and the furniture. I wasn't convinced that it was a direct reference to the "Bed-in" until the Beatles were seen on the television performing their hit song of that time "Twist and Shout."
The next room contained a white grand-piano. This was the part I'd been looking forward to the most because I kept hearing "Play Imagine on a white piano" during commercials on chom and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. After I had patiently waited for a lady to stop hogging the piano I finally had my turn. You are required to put head phones so that only you can hear yourself playing. In front of you is the sgeet music to the song "Imagine." I didn't actually play Imagine since my music reading skills are poor but I did have a little bit of fun. After John and Yoko came back from their honeymoon in Amsterdam, they were denied entry to the United Stated. The caption didn't actually say why but i figured it was an easy guess. The couple decided to publically announce the opening of their new country called "Nutopia", Aplace that didn't actually exist but was essentially
