If NS is CRAP...what can we do to fix it?

Lately we have been seeing a ton of threads popping up complaining that the forums have gone to hell, and most of us agree. The question is how do we make you guys happy. We walk a fine line in the moderation world with our decisions of what is funny -> dumb -> annoying -> utter crap. Where do we draw the lines and what would you like to see deleted/left alone.

This site is here for you guys and girls so we are always open to suggestions, just please give us something to work with. Remember you can always message any of the Green or Red names and let us know if there's something you see we may have missed, we can't be everywhere.

So fire away with suggestions and comments here (without the need for a dozen threads) and we'll see what we can do.

Im not saying NS is crap in anyway whatsoever. but NSG in particular gets really bad for stupid posts/threads, trolls, reposts and just unnecessary content. However, in the past few days i've noticed the mods really using there power over there and I must say its been getting better. So if things like "whos your fav celebrity crush" gets made and right after "whos your fav male celebity crush" gets made, well the 2nd one should be deleted. Theres just a lot of annoying shit in that forum but its awesome to see the mods cleaning up more over there. Keep it up!

its definitely gotten better recently.

The problem was mostly trolls and reposts, as has already been mentioned. And some threads were just getting ridiculous. I'm not a fan of threads where the title is something like "hahahaha!" and then all the op writes is "penis!" or something like that.

Repeat threads got annoying too, but most seem to be deleted or died down. I was getting really sick of seeing at least 5 very active threads about the Trailblazers. It seems like a lot of the newer members brought 4chan attitudes about posting shit with them.

It's alright now, but it was just really annoying to see someone asking a legit question, then being bombarded with fail pictures, and those damn pictures of pokemon that tend to not make much sense.

But regardless of what you mods do, i already found a solution in trying to stay out of nsg until around next november. If it's like this now...i can't imagine what july will be like

hate to double post but i wanted to point this out...

i just went into nsg specifically, and it was good. We're talking about the same old stupid shit like stale peeps, crazy news stories (red power ranger) and as always, college advice for high schoolers, without the crap we had been getting recently.

that is what nsg at least is supposed to be. And that was really the only place i was noticing a significant problem.

People will just whore and get their post count up to 50 instantly. There are plenty of random forums hidden around NS they can do that in safely.

But I think the moderation needs to recognize someones true belief in a post and just trolling to start a fight. I hate it when a thread has promise, a troll comes in saying something obviously ignorant and stupid and the thread loses everything because of that one troll. People just start to argue with him/her which is exactly the reason they came into the thread in the first place.

aside from the above mentioned, I have a few ideas that may help...

1) some kind of system that rewards people for identifying and informing mods of bunk threads. Even if it's just a star or something beside their name, it may help motivate the community to "moderate itself" more proactively.

2) post edits and deletes.

why can't I edit or delete a post I've made? it seems like a no brainer, and 99% of other forums out there have a system that allows this.

3) pictures/banners in your signature.

again, 99% of other forums out there allow this, why not NS? It would help the community of computer graphics artists keep their skills sharp, and promote a little more discussion in media & arts (or even become a section of its own)

I'd say great suggestions till I read the last one. I can't stand banners and pictures in signatures. To me it looks terrible and just clutters up the thread. Please don't do this.

Its time to crack down on racism and sexism. All thats shit about," your a girl what arent you in the kitchen?" or "canadians are stupid". Seriously, it I had a quater for everytime I see that kind of post, I could personally fund NS for a year.

The ban hammer should be raised and ready to strike with full force...just to settle down NS over the summer.

if you make it so banners are required to be smaller than 600w x 100h it may seem less cluttered, but to each his own i suppose.

add a few more mods?? I'm not sure if there a certain times when certain mods have to be on but if it could work, a schedule wouldn't be bad. Maybe 2 mods on at all times. Also if there are more mods on it's a better chance that the troll threads will get deleted faster

Don't be afraid to ban more people, we obviously have enough skiers to have quality content, if there are two that just spam NSG like 100 posts saying the same thing in 10 minutes and post indecent pictures i think we should just go ahead and do a month ban no matter what because obviously they don't need to be contributing to NS in the manner that they are.

oh also, right now there is 2 mods on right now. I'm not saying that is a bad thing but how are mods going to patrol give or take 6 main forums and however many cult and regional ones.

yeah i think the ban hammer should fall a little more often there are way to many trolls that just keep posting and its really irritating
i understand that there is only so many things mods can see at once which is why i agree adding a few more mods would definitely benefit the site
overall i love NS but a ton of people complain I wonder when the "exclusive" cults will start up again...

I like the idea of something to show your effort in keeping the site clean. It would definitely promote members to help out and keep NS legit.

I think the general consensus of editing/deleting posts is not to add that feature. That's what gives NS its little spark. Have a preview post button and we're set.

And no fucking way on pictures and banners in signatures, are you crazy?! Ha.

Why not add a little 100 second counter for editing, i know it is used on a few other forums, and would enable to to correct anything they wish to in their post but not delete it and change it after more than 100 seconds.

Seriously though I think the place runs great. Adds????? Big deal, I just don't pay much attention to em. The ones that drop down kinda suck, but still easy enough to get around. This place rules now more than ever.

I think an edit or delete feature for posts would lessen user accountability on NS. But an optional post preview would be kinda nice, especially for posting pictures, vids, etc.

1) Make our avatars/icons larger? I mean the dimensions. Not huge, but maybe like 75 by 75 pixels? or 100? beats me. I just think it would be cooler with larger icons, although that would probably use up more bandwidth than we want?

2) I made a thread talking about this, putting the forums or pictures in some sort of flash? Or some html code where the replies to a post will come up without having to refresh... Or even being notified about a message without having to refresh? call me lazy, but i think it would be a nice addition. For the photos section, would you guys be able to sort of do what facebook has? where if you press on the picture, or press the left/right keyboard buttons, the picture changes without having to completely reload the page? This would help a lot, and i would actually look through way more pictures. If that's too much code to handle, can you atleast make it so when you press the Next button, the page stays scrolled down? its a pain to always have to scroll back down for every picture....

3) BRING BACK QUICK CHAT! There have been numerous threads about this. The older members remember how fun and jokes quick chat was, and we're still upset it was taken away. SO PLEASE BRING IT BACK!

4) This is minor but maybe change the font in the reply to thread box? I feel like we can use a nicer font than this coding font, but it's no biggie.

As for the don't-do's// Please don't allow people to have pictures in their signatures. This would clutter up the forum like a muhfucka. No emoticons as well.

Sorry if this was supposed to be strictly forum add-ons. I kinda talked about things to improve the site, not just the forum...

Yeah I vote no pictures signatures..

But what I would like to see is:
 auto hot links..
 take out the http so when people do attempt to post links they arent double http'ed
 higher quality video section
 certain number of posts to post a FS thread - lead to less scammers?
 more prominent search bar
 edit post button/even maybe a delete post button

 eh thats probably not it, but just putting out some ideas.. in all though I don't feel those are that important, and I don't think NS has gone to hell.. but those additions couldn't hurt.

maybe put a limit on how many threads they can start per week?

1) post preview would be dope and extremely useful mostly so people don't fail at posting a link or a picture multiple times in a row.

you should ban bothersome IPs. Make it a three strike system: 1st strike is a warning, second strike a 1 week ip ban, third strike a year ban.

My opinion:


Pictures and stuff in signatures: hell no ( NS has probably the neatest and most attractive forum format already.)

Bigger icons: Nah.

Edit/Delete post button: No (that would make eveything so confusing).

Trolls-Aliases: The three strike system mentioned above.

Optional post preview: Definately.

More mods: Maybe just like 4 more, I dunno.



I also wish that NS would save your paypal info in your profile to make purchases easier, leading to increased profits. (or does this already happen? I might just be dumb.)
