Burning an .avi file so you can watch it on a DVD player?

I have a few movies on my computer in .avi format and when i try burning them it wont play on a home dvd player. any suggestions on what to do or if i have to convert it or a good program to use to convert or burn it? +K for anyone who helps

I tried posting it in the media/arts forum but got no responses, i figured more people would look in here.

I use a program called DVD Flick, its free just google it

i use nero and it works fine.  plays anywhere
