Black Diamond skins seem to be some of the best available. European companys, (like g3) tend to make thinner, lighter skins, which are less durable and harder to deal with in the wind. Black Diamond makes a few different skins. The Ascension (I have these) are the heaviest, most durable, and have superior grip compared to GlideLite. GlideLites, on the other hand, are lighter (not as light as most euro brands), have superior glide, and can fit into a large pocket (Ascensions do not). The question is what kind of terrain you plan on skinning. If you plan on skinning straight up peaks and skiing down, go with the Ascensions. If you're going to have to skin for a little while before getting to the peak you want to climb, go with the GlideLites. If you only skin in cold snow, you might consider the mohair/synthetic mix (good glide and grip, but doesn't work well in warm snow, you would have to get the STS tail clips separately). Which ever you get, get the STS tail clips (better for twin tips than Clipfix) and do not get the Customs (precut for BD skis). As for size (width), a truly anal skinner would probably get 140mm and cut them all the way down, but again, the answer lies in what you want to do with them. If you need maximum traction for steep ascents, get a 130mm skin. If you need more glide, a 120mm skin would be fine. A 130mm GlideLite STS might be a good compromise. Also, have a shop cut them. Skins are sticky bastards and if you haven't worked with them before, you have no idea what you are getting into. Anyway, there is a ton of info on tgr about skins so search around there for more info too.
