Who agrees that Freeskier Magazine is a terrible representation of our sport.

I've felt this year for years, but lately the magazine has become a source to promote the top 20 skiers in our sport in a way that makes skiers want to quit skiing. we need a mag that show and represents whats really going on and showcases guys like jon brogan, wesson, the kid with the big ass teeth, parry, hornbeck, and all the other dudes that ski for the love and actually progress the sport. I guess I just miss freeze. but if you want to make a change you have to act, cancel your subscriptions to this shitty ass mag, and if you got the skilz start something new.!!!!

you know what i love freeskier

but i do wish they coverd more skiier but i wouldn't want to ask anybody at freeskier for any thing more then they give us. They don't owe us anything and i say they give us more then a legitament amount of knowledge, pictures, and entertainment

The first issue of freeskier has jonny mosley and cindy crawford on the cover and a year later saucer boy shane mconkey, now that is not a good representation of skiing, but that's what ski culture was back then 11 years ago. Right now freeskier has Simon Dumont breaking a quarterpipe word record, josh bibby doing switch five in pow and sammy carlson doing a flat 5 japan off a chimney, that's what ski culture is right now. Be happy with what you have right now because skiing used to really suck when I was in high school. You have no idea how good that magazine is become and how progressive and actually FREE skiing is now. People need to know the roots of skiing to understand where it's at now.

The problem with Freeskier is they are not a true representation of the sport, they are a true representation of their advertisers, always covering the athletes who's sponsors advertise. another problem is most of their photography budget go to thus images come from the owner of Armada Chris Oconnel so it's Armada heavy to a degree that would never otherwise exist if he wasn't a staff photographer. Another challenge they have is as already stated, they are star struck by athletes to the point of over covering some people and totally ignoring others. I'm not talking about ignoring the underground riders as much as even skiers like Candide, Pollard, Seth, etc. that are in the top 20 but don't come close to the coverage they deserve in that mag if at all. Instead they cover the people in their backyard of CO, Armada riders & X Games riders. We do need magazines, they're not going to go away and shouldn't and we need more ski mags especially since every other sport has 2x more than skiing to represent it. The dudes over at Freeskier I believe work their asses off, they just don't have the big picture perspective needed to truely represent even the freestyle/freeride side of the sport.

I too contributed to Freeskier for next year (writing a piece on Mount Snow!) and just spent two days with Harvey and Digi. They're two of the hardest working individuals on the planet. Right before I hopped on my shuttle bus, we talked about the differences between NS and Freeskier and they're awesome. To be fair, there's some things that NS should do more like Freeskier and vice-a-versa but at the end of the day, that's what makes BOTH media outlets great. If they were exactly the same, you'd all be complaining about how they're too much alike.

Maybe Freeskier is a terrible representation of YOUR idea of the sport but for me, I believe they're a great representation of one aspect of our sport, just as Skiing Mag, Powder, BravoSki, and NS.com are all great at doing what they do.

Consume all media and you'll have a better understanding of the sport.

I'm sorry to offend but most you guys are completely wrong. In my opinion freeskier does a damn good job of publishing important and interesting subjects of our sport. I don't know if you guys read freeskier but most of these up and coming guys have had interviews or i garrentee you will soon have one. Not to mention freeskier focus on other aspects of our sport such as backcounty and big mountain. simon doesnt even get that much press really( with the exception of his record breaking jump, which absolutly desevered a cover). Yea i agree theres really sick shit going down with these new guys and they are progressing our sport, but its impossible for a magazine to stay one step ahead of the game with all the other sponsered events and photoshoots they have planned. They can't be everywhere at one time and they usaly end up on at sponsered events where they know that the shots are going to be good(comps, park photoshoots, and movie production trips). I garrentee you that most of those kids who really make an impression on the industy will be in the mag next year.

And don't unsubscribed the mag. How bout we all support our industry and be happy that we have a mag as solid as freeskier. It could be worse, you could be reading snowboarder mag.

I think it would be great to see coverage of some smaller comps in the mag. Or just go to a smaller mountain and talk to some of the rippers ( sort of like ride bmx where they have "scene reports"). Private park shoots and heli trips in alaska are great to read about, but I want to read about what the guys who may not live out west and ski amazing terrain are doing too.

Also, more road trip challenge.

do you even realize how hard it is to make a profit with a magazine covering freeskiing, a tiny sport? of course they are gonna put a picture of tanner or simon or some backcountry thing on the cover, because it gets people to buy the magazine. if all they did was put pictures of unknowns doing steezy rail tricks, the only people who would buy it would be park rats. their doing the best they can to cover the sport with an extremely limited budget, be happy.

I'll admit it, i do still love freeskier, but i do agree that we need a mag that highlights the guys like twall and wesson.

so instead of screwing freeskier up why not make a new mag all about the amazing guys like twall that fade off into the back round because of freeskier?

dont get me wrong freeskier is dope but it wud be doper to have a mag all about urban or somethin but i totally agree there has to be more regignition for the guys that aren't in the "top 20"

NS Should not be a mag. What makes NS so great is the community and support that the consumers donate. A magazine is a one way distribution of news, ideas, culture, etc. Yes the stories, articles, contests, and feedback from the writers of NS is amazing, but it's the input from the readers that puts it over the top.

The reason that Freeskier only represents about 10% of the industry, is because that's the only portion that pays. The sponsors pay for adds, the mag promotes the athleates supported by the sponsors, who then make money. It's all about the spread of skiing culture like NS, its about the business.

Don't get me wrong, Freeskier is a great magazine and has a great direction. Yes the adds get annoying as do the same 10-14 faces over the course of 4 years. But some of the independant articles and photography are really really good.

Overall I think that it's good as it is, eye candy. NS is where the real news happens.

Don't give up on the small amount of publicity our sport gets. Top 20 atheletes? Why not, they deserve it. There are a reason why they are there and why YOU aren't. And just because Freeskier shows a different aspect of our sport, doesnt mean they are wrong. They have a passion for skiing just like we do, and thats enough for a subscription. Sure, its not fucking Transworld, but who gives a fuck. As long as you can relate, thats enough.

Im in it for the buyers guide, which I found went downhill in a way this time.

Photo wise, I give props, but some photos are contributed by others, so Freeskier isnt really responsible for that.

Their article coverage can be better. I recently read an article on Kicking Horse and was impressed. I've read other articles before and felt that they lacked zazz. Comparing their topics to stuff that Powder or Skier does, I give a thumbs down with a farting noise coming out of my mouth. Powder does these little articles on people and places that make skiing what it is. Skier and Powder also have the greatest opening and closing write ups I've ever read. When I open the magazines, it's what I go for first.

This is where I critize myself, I barely look at a Freeskier mag, so I don't know what it's like these days.
Throw some humour in there, I give skier mad props for adding Ol' Fashion Canadian Humour.

Freeskier is not a terrible representation of our sport. It is, as Rogge said, just a portion of our sport. NS is more underground and social network based, whereas Freeskier has more of a relevance in the main-stream. I think that the major issue with the focus on the 'top 20' of our sport is that it gets repetative and boring to see the same people in each issue. Our sport isn't made up of just the best skiers in the world, although they do play a major role. Instead, our sport is made up of the combination of all the shreders on the East coast, West coast, Europe and all over. There needs to be less of a focus on the competition winners, and more on the progressive skiers. Although freeskier does a good job with this, there's always room for improvement. I agree that there needs to be much more exposure on the East coast, but that is already improving, as shown with the exposure from the Dew Tour at Mt. Snow.

I personally think that Freeskier is the best magazine of all the ski magazines around. It makes you think, what if Freeskier stopped producing magazines anymore. Then the next best magazine would be Powder Magazine, or Ski Magazine, which have little to no focus on the park aspect of our sport. Its easy to point out the flaws, and notice what could be better. Its ten times harder to respect what is already there and not take it for granted.
