Surgery and Park

So I had ACL repair done back in September, my doc originally said no skiing this year then changed his mind and said I could but no park. I got cleared just under 5 months post surgery and now I'm a little over 6 months. I've been doing very little park. ok, so the question is should I not do any more than I have already done (mini kickers and a couple boxes) or you think I shouldn't listen to the doctor and start doing park like I was before I got hurt? thanks for any help

it all depends on how loose it is... if it feels tight still DONT do it. ive seen kids start skiing right after it and never had a problem, and the next kid waited forever, then tore it right apart. listen to your body, only you can hear it.

Well its not really tight but I haven't had any pain at all since surgery. I'm just afraid of casing a jump and tearing it again. How does it tear usually like impact or twisting?

only you will know when your knee is good to go.

For some it takes them 2 years before they feel confident on their knee... my little brother on the other hand spent 2 years skiing and playing football without an ACL, so when he got his surgery, he felt amazing once the swelling went down.

Yeah for sure I tore mine last spring and didnt ski til beginning of this year.  I hit mostly rails too until about late January/early Feb.  I started hitting jumps and was afraid of casing it because that's how I tore mine in the first place, I cased a cork 7 backseat and it was fine.  Now that's just my experience though.  I followed my rehab really well and worked out a ton, it's different for everyone.  Another key to not tearing your ACL again is confidence i think too, just not being nervous about doing it again.

first off i have a few questions for you. What type of graft did you get? patella, hamstring, or allograft?
the doctor probably wouldnt let you go back to skiing so soon if you got allograft so i am assuming you got patella...

In this case, i would not want to risk retearing it after all the time you spent recouping it...don't push it for the rest of the season I would say...ski how you have been...and then spend all summer working out and rehabbing your leg again..

then next winter get back into progressing...id say for now probably just enjoy what you can you know?
but thats just my two cents

Yeah I had patella. and I ski at Wisp (don't always trust how things are built there) so I guess I will only do as much as I have been, thanks for all the help

Would there be a difference in strength for each type? Cause I got a hamstring graft about 2 weeks ago (no skiing for a while =( )

no i think they all take a long time to heal and stuff...but allograft takes the longest to set in...i have to wait til next year to ski again..or do anything other than bike/exercise.

no extreme-like sports til next winter for me...cuz i got the dead guy graft : (

from everyone that I have talked to, hamstring is the most legit.

got surgery last yr march 13th its almost been a year and i parcially tore my mcl again like twice and possibly completely today because i didint listen to my knee, i hope i dont need surgery but definitely take care of it and you'll know when you're ready jsut be patient unlike me

make sure when you immobilize your knee you have it at at least 30 degrees of flexion

you will be more likely to pull or tear your hamstring now because they took a chunk out of it, get a brace that prevents hyper extension

C'mon man, use your head....  You could permanently screw up your long-term skiing if you screw that knee up again.  Take it easy till next November and keep poppin those Glucosomine supplements.

Listen to your doctor (he knows more than all of us on here) and take it easy the rest of the season.  There are only a few months (in some places) left.  Is it really worth it?  All it takes is one bad fall and your knee could be torched again.

Patella is the strongest ACL but it isn't used as much as hamstring due to some complications.. (claim)

I had my ACL replaced with the Patella and it is the strongest graft they can use because of some bone that is on either end of the graft (or something like that... it was a few years ago). The PT graft may take a little longer to gain back range of motion (because the front of the knee is very tender because of the graft), but once range of motion is restored the muscles get back to strength pretty quickly.

On the other hand, a hamstring graft will have your range of motion back pretty quickly, but your muscles will take longer to get back to strength (your hamstring especially... duh)

My knee is rock solid since my PT graft, but the front of my knee is still tender (after 3-4 years)... it's something i've learned to live with.
