Italy Makes Avalanche Safety Gear Mandatory. Other Places Soon?

All people traveling off marked and secured ski trails must now carry avalanche safety gear according to the new Italian law. The law covers to the Piemont region in the north of Italy and supersedes the national law (L. 24 December 2003, n.363) which obliged ski tourers to use avalanche beacons if there was a clear risk of avalanche (risk 3 or above). The fine for being out in the backcountry or (off-piste) is 250 euros.

I feel that the fine is a little high, but I am for raising the awareness of avalanche safety. Just think about all the lives that have been lost this year in North America alone. Are you for or against this law?

Its sad that they have to make shit like this necessary..

Kind of like seatbelts.. Is it really that much of a hassle to click a buckle into a metal clasp?

Avalanche gear is obviously much more pricey, but you can't put a price on your own life..

I wear my beacon to the hill every day, no matter the conditions so when i acctually do need it it dosent bug me when im skiing

that should be a law in utah. so many gomer out there with easy access from so many resorts. the only thing is i dont want the beacon patrol ruining all my safety meatings.

Make it law everywhere... a couple of fines would pay for the gear you need and as has been pointed out you cant put a value on your life... Go buy the equipment and dont become a statistic!!

seatbelts don't cost 300 bucks

i hear you though, i always bring avy gear unless i'm skiing inbounds all day on a small mtn, but even if i'm skiing inbounds at a huge mtn with big bowls and cornices and shit i still wear avy gear, faces can slide even if they're inbounds

Could really argue it either way, If I was in government id instate the law just because its a good excuse to get a little bit more money for my budget while acting in the name of safety~

I absolutely agree. If you can afford to be in the backcountry skiing, then you should be able to afford backcountry gear. Its just not wise to be anywhere out of bounds without a beacon. I don't know why anyone would ski the BC without at least a beacon...
