Could you last without skiing?

The question came to me earlier when i realized it had been about a year since i skied. Last year i injured myself near the start of my season so i was out for awhile, then by the time i was ready to go again, soccer started for me, and i was forced to chose. And seeing to it as soccer holds much more potential for me, i picked that over skiing. (please don't call me a noob or gaper, when the opportunity comes up to get some of college paid for by playing soccer, i knew better than to turn it down. and i do love soccer) So it's kind of depressing realizing how long its been since i do love skiing, but somehow life goes on.

So, do you think you could last without skiing, or even just not skiing as much as you do? Or if you really want to elaborate, how would your life be different without it? Mine's different in that most of the time i would have been skiing, i'm now working my ass off in soccer.

I had a very similar situation to you...
I had a full ride to play ice hockey (Im a freshman in college right now), and I gave it up to ski.
Hockey was taking up all my weekends and free time in general, and I missed skiing!
I told my parents that I didn't care whether or not I had a full ride, I just wanted to be able to shred every weekend, and do what I love most!
If soccer does that for you, awesome!!

Do what you love, and dont regret it!!

I'm experiencing somewhat like you did.

I've grown up around snow and snow sports my whole life, and i love them, but I got the opportunity to go out to school in the Central coast of california, so i figured what the hell, lets do it.

Now im dying cause i cant ski everyday... and all I do is think about the next time i can hit the hill and shred some.  Eh, Whatev.  I'll make it through.  Weekend shredding is not terrible. 


do what you love to do, otherwise you'll be miserable like me :)

I am also having a voluntary hiatus from skiing. I decided to take a year off of school and come work in Rwanda. This would have been my 20th year on skis, and I don't think i'll get any skiing done this season. There's no snow on the equator. Sometimes your life just takes you in other directions. Personally Its been a healthy experience, not only mentally but physically. A while without skiing let's you evaluate what you like about it, and why you do it. But because it's voluntary, unlike an injury or something forced, I don't feel depressed or worried about it. It's actually freeing.

Growing up in the tetons and going to school in utah, most of my life choices were heavily influenced by skiing. I needed to get away from it for a year and define myself outside of that world. That said, I long for the mountains. Skiing hasn't lost it's grip on me one bit. When I come back, skiing will still be high on my priority list, but it will have stood the test of my reevalution.

I can last with out skiing, but if I have a choice I don't want to. It's good to find other pursuit though, playings in a soccer league with a bunch of Africans gives me something to try and improve on. And my body has liked the break, I look forward to coming back healthy and strong for next season.

Because it has been my life since I was born with my father owning a couple ski shops and a few area shops I definitely couldn't go without it. Now all I do is think about how to make money in the ski industry instead of enjoying it..

last season i skied 4 times during spring break, and that was it because of my commitments to hockey and basketball. Now that ive graduated from highschool, i decideded i didnt want to play basketball in Uni so ive be able to ski alot more. Ive still got hockey twice a week to look forward to, so its a good mix.

yea college is also part of my problem. I'm in one of those dreadful areas where we get a ton of snow, but there are no hills nearby, and not even any quality urban jibs on campus.

but whatever, i stand by my decision. It's not like i've completely sworn off skiing, i might be hitting the hill next weekend actually. It's just much harder to do now since i have to get home (2.5 hours on a bus) then go north at least another few hours to ski.

I realize to excel in my major I need to be in a climate that will allow me to do that year round. So skiing will have to take the back seat for a while.

thats not the point. If you are not doing what you love, then why do it at all? Of course he gave up sometihng a lot of kids would absolutley kill for, but he chose his passion.

If there was a situation like that where i was almost forced to quit skiing, I'd do something else similar. probably pick up skateboarding heavily or something... I just always need something that challenges me, makes me think, and even makes me a little scared. otherwise life is boring.

Im trying to decide a simillar choice, since the college with the best landscape architecture program is in syracuse. however uvm is so much closer to good skiing but its going to be a really hard decsion come april.  but i could never give it up completely.

All i can do is think about skiing. I've only gotten in 2 days where i got 110 days last year. Its been rough but i think i'll have enough money saved up to get a pass soon. so what if its already feb. haha. Snow ski all winter Water ski all summer....no gap in the seasons all skiing all the time.

So you just love soccer more than skiing. People do exist who don't live and breathe skiing. There are dudes like you whom skiing is a hobby for. And then there are guys like tanner hall, who I wouldn't be surprised if they killed themselves if for some reason something happened that they couldn't ski for the rest of their lives. I personally wouldn't last long before snapping and taking up heroine.

i love skiing and i love soccer, but i know i'm better a soccer. Skiing i can accept as a hobby whereas soccer is a 24/7 thing for me. If i'm not playing, i'm watching it or reading about it. Soccer also happens to be cheaper (the most expensive thing for me are my goalkeeper gloves, which probably cost only as much as some of you guys' poles) and i think soccer holds too much potential for me to give it up.

i was surprised actually, after like 6 months without skiing, i kind of lost the desire a bit. (granted it was also 100 degrees out in july, and i was out in an open field all day)

i geuss, i mean I haven't skied all that much this year,(but then again I'm going skiing over feb. vaca) and I don't feel the emotionl attachment to skiing like I once did, so yeah.  Who knows what will happen next year.

my family and friends pick on me because i always talk about skiing and wanting to go, i even dream about skiing. sometimes its nightmares about crashing in like a big air comp. then i wake up like panting and shit. scares the shit out of me.

Probly not. Its been a shitty winter so far in the PNW and I havent been able to go much... The only way I can make it through is by trying to distract myself which only works for a little while. But I still think, watch, and dream about skiiing 24/7.  Hopefully next year will be better.

the only way i could last without skiing would be surfing perfect waves everyday, but perfect waves dont come everyday so i guess i coudn't last

No. I don't ski enough as it is. I hate summer. Summer is torture. I'm not playing soccer this year so I can ski more. (it wasn't that great anyway)

hell no, If I dont ski for more than 2 days in a row I start being realy down and depressive... I need the adrenaline boost to stop me from being numb and bored. theres no way I could last without it

I played soccer all my life, I thought it was extremely fun and on occasion miss it.. but during the winter time.. nothing but skiing for me..

I definitely could not live without skiing.

That would never happen though - I would find a way. And if I really, really couldn't - then I would be involved in skiing from another aspect - such as a clothing line or ski company. But skiing is my life, it's in my heart. If it went away - so would much of my zest, personaly and energy.

Ohhh I don't want to think about it.

I havent had the same situation because I dont play any sports but I probably couldnt go without it, skiing is always on my mind and during the week I just look forward to the weekend to ski and when I cant go I start to flip out
