Concussion

i hit my head pretty hard skiing the other day. i had a helmet on but afterwards i felt pretty spacey, tired, and i had a stomach ache. im not sure if i had a concussion. it happened on saturday and now it tuesday and i still have a headache?

that sucks man, hope youre feeling better. but did you check your pupils? dilation pretty much signifies a concussion.

the thing that worries me is the tiredness and stomach ache though. im pretty sure you should go to your doc right quick homie.

yeah all 3 are classic signs of concussion. if you are still feeling them 3 days later time to go see a doc, taking another hit now would be a REALLY bad thing so skiings not the best idea

This thread sheds some light for me.

Towards the end of last season I was messing around on some mini jumps the groomers had made over on our beginner peak. In an attempt to throw a 3 off one of them one of my skis caught an edge and and smacked the back of my head on a SUPER hard landing. Luckily I had my helmet on, but over the next 2-3 days i had a headache and I my stomach hurt, enough so that I even threw up a couple times. I wasn't sure if I had a concussion or not, but after reading this it sounds like I probably did >_<

I don't wanna think about what kind of dmg I would've had without my helmet though...

yup. second impact syndrome. it will leave you mentally retarded (seriously) and unable to live alone for the rest of your life. let alone ski. DONT RIDE FOR A FEW DAYS!

DON'T ski today.  Rest and some Ibuprofen is the best way to recover.  Take it easy for a day or two at least until you feel well again.  If your symptoms continue or get worse by tomorrow, doctor no questions asked.

ya you shouldnt it doesnt sound like u had a bad concussion but the problem is when u have a concussion ure brain stays swelled for a few days so if u hit it again and it swells more it could get to big for ure skull and thats not good. last year i had a bad one i got knocked out and didnt remeber how i got there and i kept asking what happen every 5 min the doc told me id be dead without a helmet on. and i couldnt stimulate my brain for 3 days so i had to stay home from skool and only watch boring movies like chick flicks

Give it a week without doing anything physically strenuous, then go on a treadmill or a run and if you're alright then you can get back to skiing.

yeah concussions are a bitch.  had a major/severe one during a pre season soccer game.  brutal.  sleep and time are the best solutions.

Even if you only have a headache and it seems minor, still take some time off skiing. You don't necessarily have a concussion if you have a headache but it's not a risk you want to take. Also, If you puke after hitting your head, you have a concussion.

I've had 7 concussions now, and they never get any easier to handle. I was wearing a helmet for all but the last one (collarbone video), and nowadays I forget things really easily.

They're all signs of concussion but probably not major concussion if you can keep focus, watch tv and use a computer without getting dissy.  It's probably wise not to ski for a few days atleast until the headaches go away, if you do ski lightly and don't fall.  A test of concussion becuase it effects your basic motor skills is hold your arms out to the side, shut your eyes and try and touch the end of your nose with one finger just by bending your arm sideways. If you can't do i then it's definately concussion.  It sounds stupid but I had major concussion last year and I couldn't do it for three weeks.  Hope its only a mild concussion.

Reminds me of last weekend when we were out in the little park, this snowboarder went off a small box and landed on his head and had a fucking seizure. Everyone else just skiied around him so we went down and waited for him to stop and rolled him over. When he came to he had no idea where he was or what had just happened to him. He def had a mad concussion. Ski patrol came down and we told them everything and then the kid refused medical care and they let him go....dumbass.

fuck. i just got one yesterday. shit's sketchy especially considering i wasn't doing anything weird.

cab 5 off a 20/30 footer at tline. dunno how it happened, think i might have kuckled or something. woke up confused as fuck. ski patrol was talking to me and i just had no recollection of the day or how i got hurt. i thought i was dreaming, couldn't remember the month. everything was a blur. that initial feeling of confusion might be crazier than alot of drugs out there.

as i got sledded down to the ski patrol hut things started to come back to me, but thats when i realized the other problems of the whole situation. on the lift before the run that i got a concussion we were packing a bowl, but there was too much wind to get it lit so i had it in my pocket that whole time (ski patrol went through my pockets to find my wallet with my name and identification but i guess they didn't care when they found the piece haha)

also i was using my friend's pass at timeberline that day so i could've gotten pretty screwed, but once again they must have not noticed/ cared.

i ended up breaking my helmet and have had an ongoing headache since, they said that it might go on for up to two weeks. no fun. helped me realize the risks of our sport.

ya, ur concussed, i'd go to a doc.  and r u crazy, you usually need a week of having no symptoms to even start exercisizing, so i'd say you need to hold off on teh skiing.
