Will Cell Phones Replace Computers?

As we all know our world has changed a great amount in the past few years and it shows no signs of slowing.  One technology that has changed the most: cellular phone.  While computers have seen amazing changes and upgrades, phones have been totally redesigned.  Many phones are being redesigned as a small hand held computer featuring a phone.  With these upgrades to the devices, does it mean they will replace the computer.  They're already killing/killed the landline, calculator, and PDA/Calendar.  Is the computer the next thing to go or is there a limit to where the computer will have to stay?  Can we continue to type on the small QWERTY  keyboards or touchscreens, or will we need to be relieved with the ease and speed of a standard keyboard on any computer today?  Basically my question is: Will the cell phone replace computers?

Sure if my cellphone can pop up a 20+ inch screen and run high end shooters at top fps, oh and Id need a  virtual mouse and laser keyboard~

I will ALWAYS want a full size keyboard and at least 15" screen for anything. I really think that cell phones and computers will always exist together BUT the internet is what will go extinct. As soon as wireless companies can give a really good speed internet (DSL or better speed) for a decent price a month, who would ever want to pay for internet? 20 years, our internet will be gone, wireless internet using cell phone internet technology will take over.

Yeah, I don't think they will.  I was reading a story on Yahoo and they said soon enough the computer will be a thing of the past.  I just thought I'd see what other people thought of this.

I think computers are going to continue to advance like crazy ( think of what was in your house 10 years ago, if you had anything that is) to unimaginable technology, but as far as cell phones go- they won't replace computers until they are as fast and easy to use as a computer is.

Sorry i can't see myself doing image adjustments on a cell in PS or create flash on a cell phone, or watching movies, i hate watching them on small screens.

That was my first thought. The internet will never die. It might be drastically changed but the connection from device to device will never be disconnected.

so much better to have a cell phone with mp3 capability...why have 2 in your pocket when you need one

So get this.... I was just talking to Scott~ and he went off on this rant about how much he hated PCs.

I couldn't believe it! He said that he is secretly trying to convert everyone to a Mac by owning 2 iPhones, having meetings with Steve Jobs, and using reverse psychology on NS and all of his other friends.

He then went on to say that he thinks the computer will be extinct in a matter of 2 years as Apple comes out with a groundbreaking cell phone technology that will enable him to do the tasks that he cares most about... listening to music, sharing his photos, emailing family and friends, and that kind of stuff. When I asked him "what about Wall street and stuff? What about computer engineers? What will become of PCs in general?" His reply was "PCs are boring! Who wants to deal with spreadsheets all day? And they crash like mega! I just want a computer that is easy to use and is extremely reliable like a mac."

So low and behold, Scott~ is really a Mac fan! I think his line of thinking is the stupidest line of thinking ever. I want a computer that I can play FPS games on, or maybe even RPGs and the like. I need something to HAXOR with. I believe that the computer will not go out of style anytime soon, unlike Scott~ who thinks that it will die within the year.

Sparknotes: Scott~ told me that he thinks computers are on the verge of becoming extinct. He is a mac fan boy, and wants a device that can do all of the things he thinks are important... listen to tunes, send email, share pictures, etc.

I told him he is a retard, so please NS, agree or disagree.

No not in the mainstream.  I can see mobiles replacing landlines (as they have done in certain areas of Africa which have no landlines and so everyone uses mobiles).  Internet wise people will always use computers because they are bigger, generally speaking more powerful (at least always should be) and they can hold more data.  Until someone comes out with a phone that can do everything a computer does without compromising on any other points then perhaps but it still won't catch on.  Sometimes bigger is just better.

not computers, but they have already started replacing credit cards. in a lot of europe and asia you can pay for your vending machine purchases or gasoline using your phone.

if my cellphone could shoot out a 30" holographic screen so i could play my video games online at the highest settings possible without lagging, then maybe.

and yes i have heard about the holographic screens that are already in the works, but i do know that there are still so many things to work out with them that it will be a long time before i can watch a holographic movie on my cellphone.

devices will continue to merge with devices. if you go back 20 years ago there is no way u could predict the affect cellphones, mp3 players, laptops/desktops would have on today, same thing is the case for 20 years from now.
although devices are growing together. I work for a tech company called broadcom, we design chips that power devices like iphones, wii's, dvr's, digital cable boxes, and most every cellphone/wireless internet receiver/transmitter

be prepared to see some ill shit in the future.

^ fuck. i know im gonna sound stupid, but i never even thought about holographic screens until you mentioned it. but even then, i dont think cell phones could completely replace a computer.

No I don't know where it is.  I think it was a review on the G1 phone and in the comments people had started a debate over whether this would happen.  I personally think it will happen to the people who use computers for email and internet only, pictures (no editing, just sending and uploading).  People who edit video and pictures (simple example) will always use a computer.  Computers will obviously increase in the next 20 years dramatically.  People did bring up a good point that we cannot predict what will come in the next 20 years, but what will happen will be ridiculous.  The credit card thing sounds really cool : here is a link to an blog I found on it: http://blog.micfo.com/general/cell-phones-will-replace-your-credit-cards/
We do have a while until this is happening because computers still have yet to fully replace paper.  At school we still use a LOT of paper.  Look, you don't even need to write a list of groceries for when you go to the store, type it up on you phone and add as you realize you need something.  Just 10 years ago people would have shied away from ideas such as these.  In just 10 years, that's it, and we've come a LONG way.  Laptops were minimal back then, no one texted, no TV was "HD" DVD was a new idea, PS2 was unheard of, the most popular games system was either a Gameboy color or Nintendo 64 (remember those big chips you used to insert?).  I can't wait to see what will happen, who knows, 10 years from now some people may be looking at this thread laughing because they know we're a year away from a Cell Phone takeover.  People may soon begin to ask why they're called a phone, maybe they'll take new names such as Blackberry Horizon featuring telephone.  Possibilities are endless.

Its almost impossible to predict what the next great technology will be as breakthroughs are mostly reached through accident.
The internet for example was initially created to just share files with other scientists, no one expected it to be one of the greatest inventions of our time.
