How sharp should my edges be?

some kids i know were talkin about dulling the edges on their skis. i just bought a new pair of volkls so should i do something to dull the edges a little and what should i use? i just dont want to mess them up before i even start using them.

It depends on what you are doing with the skis.  You would generally detune (dull) the edges if you are going to be hitting metal rails, boxes, etc.

yeah thats what i mean, i realize for rails and stuff i dont want them to be too sharp but how much should i detune them and what should i use.

good: file
better: course stone; can get at a ski shop
best: loose file, then course stone, then gummy stone

however, only detune under foot. right under bindings

But if you are going to blunt your edges know that you really should not ski on ice anymore you will kill yourself.

and make sure your skiing skills are up to it. It makes it much harder to ski normal slopes because you cna't carve it properly. but it makes rails much easier if that's all you want to do. Make sure you ski slowly at first because it takes a lot of getting used to.

Hmm maybe about 4 sharps depending on what he is skiing

If your doing park than about 2 sharps and if anything else than go with about 3 or 4 sharps it just all depends

Yah 10 sharps is ONLY if you are racing otherwise it can be VERY dangerous and even may result is serious injury or even death

I don't have them dulled or anything. I prefer to just do rails and boxes and let them get dulled "naturally". yes at first you're going to cut and stuff but it ends up dulling in just the right places.

I detune the whole ski for presses and because if you start coming of the rail a little you wont catch your edge.

Also a rubber stone works well and all of the above.

I took my skis into the shop and used the belt sander.  Shit worked. Who needs edges anyway.  If you like carving up ice then you probably should ski race.

You should dull the other parts of yoru ski a LITTLE, it's bad to have one part of your edge razor sharp and another part round as Alba's glorious ass. You're not going to be able to get it too dull with a wet stone, just crank on the edges underfoot for five minutes and do a little grinding on the rest of the ski to keep it somewhat even.

You should just dull them a little bit under the binding and the rails will take care of dulling them better!

this is a pretty good idea, but the problem is when you first start. sharp edges catch much easier on rails so its kinda sketchy to have brand new edges. i would recommend a little detuning then let everthing else happen naturally.

ive never sharpened any of my skis lol. we tune our own and im too lazy. besides, rails are just that much easier dull.

as long as you realize that your edges are sharp you'll be fine. i don't detune and have never really caught. especially if you ski early season when your just doing straight slides and such on easier features. if you are switching up or spinning on i would detune underfoot.

I sharpen my skis every couple weeks when I ski. But that's just me...helps me so much when I carve off lips and stuff. Plus for all around mountain shredding, it's way more fun to be able to use all the edge and really lay it out. I probably sound like a total gaper :P

But for rails and stuff, I agree with above. Just let them detune naturally. It'll do it just right.
