User transfer from iMac to MacBook Pro

i just got a new macbook pro, and i want to transfer my user from my imac to the laptop.

If i just bypass the option at the beginning to transfer via firewire, since i don't have a firewire and don't want to spend any more money, can i just drag my user onto my portable harddrive, and then drag that user to my other computer from the harddrive? will that just allow all my apps to reinstall blah blah???

i have no idea bout that tech stuff. but there was that program that will transfer all the music from you pod to your comp. why dont you just use that?

thats music. I'm talking about transferring over  150 gigs of applications and information from one to another
