Skiing is too easy.

learning how to ski is extremely difficult, the same for learning freestyle. but now with equiptment being sick and every mountain having real terrain parks, you can turn "pro" in a year. my first grind other than a tree, was a 3 foot high bar at killington. there were no super boxes at northstar or step downs at breck, there was mogul jumps and tranniless kickers. haha, im stoked on the progression of everything, but is it too easy? should 16 year olds be able to step up to our veterans? ive seen people ride switch way better than they can ski forward. than get up top and not be able to ski. at all. double flips and figure skater spins are a dime a dozen, and anyone with a water ramp and the ability to ski straight can call themselves the best at the sport? for now, the incredible tricks are just fun to watch, but newschool skiing is getting too easy.

I hope u know what being pro means. it means spinning both directions going either forward and switch, Getting a variation of pretzels, slides, butters, hand-plants, etc. on park rails as well as urban, then u have to take everything you know and add style to it, make it look smooth and clean. Doing these things in the park is not easy, no matter how perfect it may be sculpted. Now you have to take that outside of the park, building jumps in the back country is the next step, after that is being able to do everything that you know how to do and do it off of natural terrain. Plus skiing has evolved and progressed so much that 540's, 720's, and 900's are what the pros do on a day to day basis just to keep in shape, once comps happen they push it into 1080's 1260's and 1440's. so please i doubt you would be able to go pro in one year.

I guess I see the logic of the thread creator's argument now after looking at this post with an objective mind.

No, a first year skier could NOT even begin to compete in anything outside of the park. But in the park there are rollerbladers who are learning 9s and corks and shit in their first few months...park is more gymnastics and air sense and shit while big mountain is more of how you feel on your skis and how big balls you have (not saying park isnt ballsy either).

If you look at being a pro in a certain area, it means you're the best at your discipline. It leaves almost no room to be the best in another one.The best big mountain skiers can't always throw down more than a 3 or a 5 and the best park skiers will have trouble shredding a sick line...there are the exceptions of course (henrik windstedt, t-hall, jon olsson, and a few others).

idk about forced but more single minded. as one guy put it skiing is the only sport where it is totally unacceptable to move. i have no problem with that style but goddamn lets see some variety. anytime anyone tries to break out of the xxxxl afterbang mold they get hated on.

Im not saying that you wouldn't progress a lot in the first year, i did. I'm saying that there's a very very small chance, almost none, that you would become pro in the first year.

there is no inbetween its just one extreme or the other and it pretty much put a stop to anything good happening.

other than the skijocks who train halfpipe and now only do triple flips for paycheques.

i will agree that most of the tricks are too easy but when it comes to putting style in, thats where we are stuck, you cant copy the style of simon dumont or tanner hall, you need your own style.

pretty much any good gymnast will be able to throw a double on skis within a year with style, which therefore qualifies you as sponsorable and being able to win big air comps and then get free stuff. So, I think that there's a pretty good chance that many people (if they wanted to) could go pro pretty easily with a bit of practice within the first 2 years in the park discipline.

in baseball, when you turn pro you have to use a wooden bat.

if freestyle skiing was for some reason more difficult, we wouldnt have am skiers doing pro tricks.

One of the questions ive always wanted to know is, what do you mean by cant ski well? coming from a state with many runs 45 degrees or steeper, i know that there are some good skiers. we don't have a very good park anywhere and so I've always wondered how bad the people who ns claims can only ski park actually are.
also, to answer the OP question i think its more about accessibility. it may help improvement to have a nice set up, but you still wont see people that dont ski 100+ days a year making it to the top. you also wont see pussies getting to the top because no matter what it is still going to be scary to try the stuff you have to do to become pro.

I see your point at my mountain I see all the freestyle team basically slide down to the park. Their actual skiing is terrible. given those kids can spin and flip and do rails but the pros can ski everywhere and most pros have a racing background and switched the freestyle. I hate to put freestylers into this generalization but probably 70% of freestylers cant ski for shit, Call me out on this post but at least on my mountain and most other mountains on the EC kids cant really ski

thank you for this. i can't believe no one quoted this yet. the first sentence of the second paragraph pretty much sums up the debate.. along with the rest of the well laid out paragraphs. seriously.. it's pretty logical and makes complete sense.

i remember back in the day when i started (1999) when my local park was so terrible and there were probably 5 other freestyle skiers at the hill. but most importantly i hadn't been exposed to good park features or even certain basic tricks like 270s off until 2 years into it. exposure is everything. think about how newschoolers provides detailed information on "how to become a better skier" aka videos, threads, pictures and thus making it "easIER" to "make it pro".

all the opportunities are now available to every skier if they so please. NS, amazing parks, camps, trampolining, water ramps, equipment all make it EASIER to become "pro" faster.

i agree with you a little, its too easy for kids to get good and not realize theres a lot more to skiing then 270ing out in a dress and afterbanging, tricks IMO dont define you as a good skier, go shred some pow in the trees real fast and smooth and then see what happens

Dude I totally feel part of what you're saying.
Doubles and huge spins are stupid and inaccessible. So are huge jumps.
But I don't think that means that we have to make learning park terrifying. Lots of people just wanna hit a box to say they did it and brag to everyone that they did a 50 on a box when they were in Vail over X-mass break last season. Then they go out and buy some ski videos and park skis for the couple weeks they ski a year and bring money to skiing. The problem is mountains that only have a flat box and a 10ft jump because they're afraid of the liability.

ok let me set something straight. I snowboard as well as ski. I love the fuck outta both of them, but skiing is a fuckton harder than snowboarding. I'm pretty young and it took my a day to 360 on a snowboard and like 3 sessions on skis. If you think skiings easy, snowboard. Sorry bout the hate

^^ both of you need to respect here. First of all, the  thread creator has been skiing in this scene longer than you. Second, as far as people turning pro within in a year, Chris Turpin was pretty dam close and that was before parks were as big as they are now.

Therefore, he makes a good point using Turpin as an example. With parks so strong, people could progress even faster than Turpin did.  Ns is not getting dumber, it just that more and more people are contributing more and more ideas that are initially perceived as dumb or retarded.

i get this thread!  There are a lot of skiers who ski park at my resort and you prolly couldn't take them down a steep ass race hill or nice pow or mogul run.  but then again the park is really all we have here....

I see his point, but like one of the guys above me, I live in Indiana and maybe get 15 inches of real snow a year if that. The rest is all made, and we dont have moutains to ski, we ski the park and jib on shit on the other trails. Thats why its progressing, thats what everyone is doing sking park.
