So this season i over jumped a kicker and flat landed tearing my acl! Just wondered what the best thing to do if you know you gonna land hard on your knees, is there a good technique to many try and land on a different part of body?
well often times, when i undershoot, i stick my tails down so that they hit the snow first. it might just be me but i feel like it kinda absorbs some of the blow as opposed to "sticking the landing" which wasnt the best idea and i've also found that out the hard way....
yea... i do the same thing... you can also sort of apply this to overshooting... you just have to extend your legs right before you lend and try to absorb as much as you can with your thighs... then if you still feel like your gonna slam then just let it happen... dont fight it as for thats where you can really hurt yourself...
come down on your side. that is your bodies self defence mechanism. that way your bodies strong structural elements can take some of the force. ribs, arms and hip. these are hard things to break, much harder than a ligament. sure you may bust your wrist or something, but i'd rather ski with a sock on my hand for a bit than have lasting knee damage. mind you, i tore my acl falling down the stairs. booyah!
i watched this dirt biker on an interview once, and he said that if u fall u should just relax and roll down the landing, it may be smart on skis to ? just dont relaxe totaly but alittle so you just fall down on your side or something ? .
i dont think u can hurt your self so easy then
What works best for me is to put your tails down first and roll with the impact. Dont try and stick it or you will fuck yourself up. I find it less painful to tomahawk down the landing rather than trying to land flat and fuck my shit up.
i do fall alot (ten times a day.. skis poping etc..) , every time i try to relax, and act like if was made of rubber.
as im very light i case jump more often that i overshoot them, so the hits are not as hard as the one your are talkng about but still casing a 50 ft jump hurts bad.
haha, kinda hard to roll down the landing when you've overshot it eh
it's hard to exlain, but dont try to land forward like you normally do, extend your legs, lean to your side a little bit so your skis take your forward force and the remaining downward force involves you falling sideways (rather than all of it on your knees)
whenever i overshoot i tend to turn 90 as fast as i can so i dontgo so fast for some reason just as like instinct since im scared shitless i just wanna stop, it usually makes things alot worse so my advice is to jsut TRY and ride it out for 100-200 feet then stop lay down and be happy for the great adrenaline rush you got without a roller coaster woo-hoo, unless u get hurt then its not so fun.
there is nothing you can do to protect yourself from overshooting. all you can do is stretch out in mid air to slow your speed and overdo the absorption. I blew my heel from overshooting a jump at blue last week, it still hurts
the absolute worst thing to do is to fully extend your legs before impact... thats how you blow out knees. in all reality theres no real good way to absorb an overshoot. if you try and stick it with straight legs you will fuck your knees up, if you bend your knees you will probably take a knee to the face or slam your face off the snow, if you turn sideways you're going to slam really hard on your head or arms, if you land on your back well, you're probably going to crack a vertebrae. you're really looking at the lesser evil here. i'd say that landing on your feet back seat would probably be best, you're still going to slam your back/head into the snow but at least the impact will be dispersed over more of your body... basicly, don't overshoot.
you have to try and absorb it the best you can....but basically you're fucked. i did it at breck over spring break and landed totally flat.....severely bruised my knee. i'm sorry to hear it tho all you guys. its sucks so bad, injuries are no good
well it depends on the jump but i will sometimes just mad hip check if its into soft stuff (pow) or i will absorb it a bit with my knees and then let myself washout to the side.
