Fuck taxes

Learned yesterday that my parents did indeed declare me as a dependent on their taxes this year. So, even though I made about $6k completely on my own, no rebate for me!!!!! Pretty pissed actually...

You missed my point. If your parents declare you as a dependent of them, then you aren't eligible for the stimulus package. So even though I made a lot of money and should get money back from this stimulus plan, I get nothing cause my parents declared me as a dependent.

are you sure? there is a different between the "stimulus package" and a normal tax refund..

I might get like 150 back from my refund, but that would happen no matter what. As for the stimulus package, I don't get anything due to them declaring me as a dependent.

Anybody in their first two years of college should look into the Hope Credit for sure. You get back dollar for dollar up to around 2500 or 3500 I think for all school expenses. I'm pretty sure this is if your not a dependant and paying for your own school, might have some stipulations about grants and things though. Still worth checking out, I've had some refunds in the past up close to 3k.

It is depressing to see what they take from you though. I think I paid close to 5k in fed taxes this year and gota refund of around 1100. Come on stimulus package I need a new TV.

at trembalnt in quebec.. we have 15% for normal quebec taxes and an extra 1% for "tremblant taxes" it sucks!

Virtually ALL personal income tax collections, excluding the upper 5% of earners, goes straight to pay for the INTERST on the national debt. It's beautiful really.

there's also the College Tuition Expenses deduction.  your school should send you a 1098-T saying how much you can deduct. 

but you can't deduct it if you make more than $80,000 as your modified adjusted gross income (includes wages, interest, dividends, stock proceeds).

this completely fucks you over the year you graduate college:
work during first half of year for moderate wage (while at school).
paid school tuition for first half of year.
graduate mid-year.
sell stock/bonds/Tbills/CDs to help buy car or down payment on apartment/house
work for second half of year for real wage (right after graduation).

and then if this totals more than $80k.......oh no!  you can't claim your college tuition as a deduction. 

basically you should go be a lazyass and tour europe for a couple months and not make any money so you can still deduct those expenses.

ICEPOINTA please tell me how happy you are that this system fucks over college graduates on their year of graduation for getting a decent job and creeping above the magical $80,000 mark.  who the fuck made that number up?  make it $150,000.  make it $200,000.  make it $3,000,000.  if you're an undergrad in college, no matter how much money you legally make that calendar year (and report to the IRS to get taxed on), why can't you claim your college expenses (as reported by the school itself on the 1098-T)?  there's no reason for that.  none.

You all just need to quit your bitching about your taxes and having to pay taxes.  All of those public education kids and state college kids especially.  You pay taxes to be able to have such services.  I'm not saying the schools arent underfunded and that they aret the best, but at least you get these privilages.  Why dont you go live in a country with no funding for schools and shit for an economy and then complain.  Quit  being pussys.

 I just went and bought a copy of the constitution and there was an amendment proposed in the 40s that stated that income tax would have a maximum of 25%. That would be so fucking awesome. My family would probably have been able to go on a vacation out west this winter if that were the case.

25% would be impractical.

welcome to the real world.  where its hard to buy things.  because you work, get taxed, get taxed on your taxes, rush out to go spend your paycheck and get sales taxed, only to come home and get bent over by the IRS and taxed again.
