Religious conflict + friends= I want some advice

*DISCLAIMER* This is not an argument about religion but how to keep friends and get along. Please don't make this into a religious argument because as I state in the paragraph everyone is entitled to their own beliefs.

Heres the deal. I have two really good friends Jimmy and Mohamed. Jimmy is Christian. Mohamed is Muslim. They were partying with some people and Jimmy began a religious debate with some others. Mohamed didn't want to talk about religion and asked them to stop because everyone is entitled to their beliefs and he knows that no matter what he says you can't change someone's religious views. Mohamed is not very religious but it is part of him. Jimmy said that he feels bad for Mohamed because Mohamed is going to hell since hes not Christian. Also that Jimmy wants to help Mohamed. He goes on to bash Islam in general. In my opinion Jimmy is being quite ignorant. If not ignorant then he is at least being extremely rude to say that to his best friend. Mohamed ignores the situation because he doest want to start a conflict that won't end.

I would have trouble reading that so heres the shortened version:

A friend bashed another friends religion.

Other friend is offended as am I because I believe that everyone has a right to believe in what they like.

I don't want to loose the offending friend but I can't sit idly and awkwardly by without doing something.

What should I do?

tell him to shut the fuck up and to let the other kid live his life. if he won't do that, he doesn't seem like much of a friend to me

have them talk to each other while youre there. if jimmy cant sort it out with mohammed and at least apologize...hes a dick. end of story.

yeah my friend is baptist and i'm quaker, and I just dont want to get into it with him. nothing good will come of it. you need to tell your friend to stfu, like seriously no one wants to hear theyre going to hell, its offensive and imo way too many christians say it and think it gets taken lightly...it doesn't. anyone tells me I'm going to hell and I'm gonna get super pissed.

I totally understand where you guys are coming from. I'm still in shock so I want to let it chill for a little. there was nothign like this ever before in the friendship. We have always been really tight, good friends

they're probly never going to get along. just be real with people and recognize that, but also tell each of them separately that they gotta be respectful around you. Sometimes just the fact that someone is telling them that they are causing drama for no good reason is enough to cause things to settle out.

ya fuck jimmy.  even though he is a christian, he shouldn't think anyone is going to hell for not believing.  No one is supposed judge who is going to hell and St. Paul said non Christians can enter heaven.  so jimmy is a little bitch.  tell him i said that.

obviously "fuck jimmy" isnt exactly what you were looking for so heres a little different answer...

The topic of religion is similar to the topic of politics which is why niether should be brought up at partys.

Tolerence, thats what you should discuss with Jimmy. To be intolerant is looked down upon in any religion including his. Therefor he needs to learn to tolerate others who may or maynot have the same faith.

the only time i get into a religious conflict is if the other person is not sure of what there religion really is.  but in this case jimmy has no right to go against other peoples beliefs.

On a more serious note:

I had a muslim roommate last year in college. I am Christian. We both actually enjoyed talking to each other comparing/contrasting our beliefs. Try to make them do the same. They'll both learn something (altough Jimmy moreso then the other).

On a side note, it sounded like you wrote the thread while at the party like here is the situation, they wont stop bitching, what should i do before this gets out of hand. Chances are they are both too hung over to remember it. At least i hope so.

all religion's are fucked up! they are just a belief system put into place to control people and give them some sort of comfort/hope in rough times. 

religion is why the US is losing the war in Iraq and there will never be peace in the middle east until either the muslims or the jews are wiped out.

you can't talk some sense into these muslim extremists because they've been brainwashed to believe that if they kill themselves in the name of Allah they will end up in some post life paradise. america will lose because you can't fight a group of people that are not afraid of dying and those who are killed are seen as religious heros who's families are proud that their son blew himself up for his god.


like it or not, that's the way it works over there.

It's true. I don't beleive in a god. Humans are incredibly fucked up. Life sucks so they create something to beleive in so they have something to look forward to. What they need to realize is they can make their lives better by not fighting eachother. The world is fucked up because of religion and ignorant fools. I beleive when we die, we just die. Theres nothing else so make the best of your life while you're here. Accept that EVERYONE is different and no one will agree with you on everything. Be flexible. I try to make myself happy every day and when I'm happy I'm willing to do other things that make other people happy. Pretty simple concept but obviously some people don't understand or are just not capable of it.
