Backpacking and shit.

I just found out that my acl graft from surgery last december is blown, so now I'm waiting to get surgery again. I need something productive to do with the next year, since I didn't apply to college in order to move to utah and ski. I'm gonna try and get ems certification and do some other outdoor first aid courses in the fall/winter, and then in the spring, when I'm getting near six months post op, I want to do a several month backpacking trip. Being from massachusetts, the obvious choice is the appalachian trail. However, I'd really prefer to do a trip somewhere out west, where it won't be crowded as fuck, and I'll really be out in the backcountry as opposed to the east coast where you're always near something. I know there must be a ton of routes out west but I'm struggling to find them online and I really need to start researching and planning right now, so I don't go fucking crazy. Anyone have any good suggestions? I'm thinking 1000 mile minimum, but gimme whatever you've got. Fuck knees.

pacific crest trail or continental divide trail would be the first trails to come to mind. they both pretty much stretch from mexico to canada

Hit another continent if you can afford a plane ticket. You can get by on $20 a day in SE Asia while living like a king. Huge beers for $1, under a $2 for amazing meals, rooms for $4-10 a night depending if you want A/C, pool, etc.
The best part is how beautiful it is: sand dunes and Halong Bay in Vietnam, tubing and drinking beers while floating down the river in Laos, chilling on the white sand beaches in Thailand and Malaysia and of course visiting the ruins in Cambodia.
I can't wait to go back....HEAVEN.

For sure. You could also check out the john muir trail, although i dont think it would meet your 1000 mile standard its really sick.

yeah, there's always that variety of backpacking- i highly reccomend central america- but it sounds like he wants a long wilderness trail to hike

word, SE asia sounds dope, but i've pretty much been drinking and smoking for the past year, I need to do some serious shit now, I can't just keep waiting for skiing to come back, since it seems like i'm fucking cursed now. Thanks alot for the suggestions guys, even having something to look at is making this a little easier.
