park crew: their abilities do matter, the crew needs to be able to ride every feature they have in their park, otherwise whos determining how any paticular jump is supose to hit.
i'm sure you've skiied a park that was designed only by snowboarders back in the day... ride on rainbow rails impossible for skiiers to hit properly... if the creator can't test his/her creation to adjust it, and make it correctly, why even make it at all.
the park crew does not need to be the best kids in the park, but still needs the skills to ride everything they have.
Hiring: I think qualifications come from exsperiance. what can you learn in a text book about business that applies to how to build a jump? The only thing that is gained by having a college degree, or even being in school is that they are more likely to be a dependable reliable employee. That piece of paper says that they were able to focus for four years to get their shit done, and that they probably won't flake out on the job. (all probablity and it's really cicumstantial between the individuals, i don't like generalizing this because you cant.)
Digging summer camp a bad job? Do you love skiing? It'd be a great job. If you lack that passion for skiing, the passion that drives the skiier to get up at 4:30 am so they can beat traffic up to the mountain, get first tracks and freshies from the big storm. If you're not the one to say i've had enough partying tonight, i've got to ski in the morning, or if you wake up and say this is the biggest hangover i've ever had, i think i'm going to pass on skiing today despite there being 5 ft of fresh pow, with more coming down, digging is not the job for you.
do females get discriminated against? Probably, but are there more things to be considered than exsperiance when it comes to a job like park crew? Yes.
If you had to call a bunch of friends to help you dig up some holes in your yard, plant some trees, and move some other shit around, who would you call your girlfriends who work in their garden all the time with loads of planting exsperiance, or your guy friends who don't have a green thumb, but usualy go to the gym and work out?
for park crew/lift mechanic, exsperiance plays a bit of a role, but is not the only factor to be considered, determination, physical capacity to do work, quickness of learning are all important things to be considered.
if you have an equaly qualified guy and girl, both with the same strength, same learning curve, same determination, same exsperiance you should exspect either to get hired equaly, 50/50 chance, not the woman, not the man, because if you chose one, you discriminate against the other.
