The incident occurred after a man used an object to assault his former girlfriend and another man at a townhouse in the 200 block of Yale Drive at around 2:35 p.m., police say.
"When officers arrived on the scene and they found two victims...outside of the townhouse and they found the townhouse with smoke coming from it," Alexandria Police Lt. Jamie Bartlett says.
The man fled once firefighters arrived at the townhouse.
Police are not releasing the man's name, but describe him as a 24-year-old bald black man weighing about 200 pounds and 6 feet tall.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and we taken to the hospital. Police say the former girlfriend and the man were not seriously injured.
The fire significantly damaged two floors of the townhouse, police say.
