wow you guys are closed minded, first of all zep is like one of my favorite bands and they were influential as hell, but you cant put them on your list without tolkien, half their songs are about middle earth!!! now if thats not influencing i dont know what is
second of all without tolkien there'd be no harry potter or any other fantasy, some of you need to look up the meaning of influential

stones are good too.
Damn this is so hard.
As for Rap snoop and Dre are amazing but not as influential as Run DMC without them rap would not be where it is now.
Dylan was strong and meaningfull songs but not as far as influential music wise politically for sure.

I wonder how tolkein fits there? K, so he created an entire universe pretty much, that makes him talented not influential. Not until after the movies has he become this popular, he was popular before, but definately not on my top 100 list. Not to mention, this is 20th century? The movies were 21st century released.
I'm not saying this guy is not influential, or talented. He is very much so, both, but i can think of 100 more influential people then him in the 20th century.

midwest_rep, i'm hoping you saying blink 182 being 'the true founders of hardpunk', i'm sure as hell hoping you were joking. if anything, they're the founders of a new genre of punk rock. but still, have you ever heard of a little band called NOFX? Minor Threat? they were far more influential than Blink 182. Bands didn't really evolve from blink, they evolved from 80s punk.

Dude Blink invented punk, those other bands just copied Blink. everyone rags on them cause they are so good and everyone wants to be like them. Like Op Ivy, Misfits, NOFX, Ramones, Pixies, Pennywise, they all just want to be like Blink, even though they were playing before Blink they were just seeing into the future and copying them before they were born. You guys are just naming popular artists and groups, but how influential were they really? How about Asimov? Or Pablo Neruda? Dr. Seuss? Rodgers & Hammerstein? Hendrix for sure. Louis Armstrong, John Paul Sartre, Simon de Bouvoir, Sex Pistols, James Brown, Micheal Jackson. Those are a few I can think of.

ok, first of all petek, what the hell, he was 'kind of' popular? the lotr books are the best selling books in the 20th century after the bible, and every fantasy novel/book has been directly or indirectly influenced by his books. also zeppelin, who influenced every metal band ever was super influenced by tolkien so just be quiet if you dont know what youre talking about

i think u got that kinda wrong dude, lotr books are almost definately not the second best selling books of the 20th century. And even if they were, its only a collection of a few books. Look at people like chrichton, and king, or even clancy. They didnt make the best selling books of the last century, but they are definately up there, not to mention the fact that they have more then 5 books each, that toppled record sales.(not to mention movies that did the same). And he did create a whole new world, middle earth, but man i'm sorry to break this to you, but elves, dwarves, sorcerers, etc, were all thought up of before, tolkein only put them together in an almost picture perfect way.

midwest_rep, how can you compare OPERATION IVY, a SKA band, to a punk band, Blink 182?? Maybe it's just a hunch, but i'm pretty sure you just listed the bands you could think of, that are remotely in the same genre. Seriously though, LOOK AT MY GODDAMN LOGO! You can't try to say that operation ivy 'was copying blink' they're different fucking genres. I'm not an idiot, you can't try to change my opinion by using a band i worship as an inaccurate example.
That's like saying that the Skatalites took their inspiration from the ramones. shit son, blink listened to other bands before they got their own sound. EVERY band listened to another band before getting their inspiration. But you cannot say that bands that existed a full decade before other bands were formed 'saw the evolution' and which turn music would turn. If artists could actually see how music evolved, do you not think
I probably should ask for some forgivness if i've offended you in anyway midwest_rep. Somedays when i come on here i forget that i'm talking to a bunch of people, who just love to ski.

k, lets see ure facts, i wanna see this list upon which lotr's are on the top. and i just showed my research dude. Modern library of the US top 50 best selling english books of the 20th century(one of the few organizations that keeps track). Sorry, i dont make up my research, like u pbly want to believe.
And if i'm an idiot for thinkn that popularity has anything to do with influence, then perhaps look in the dictionary. dude, i'm not sayin he wasnt influential, i'm sayin hes not #1-3 on almost anybodies list but ures, for good reason. why are u so defensive man, its just a book.
now this is where i gloat for winning the argument, but i really dont give a shit.

wait a second? what was the argument, that lotr sold more?? no it was that they were more influential. yeah elves and wizards and dwarves were around, but hobbits(usually called halflings in other books) and orcs werent (two things that are used in a majority of fantasy books now), and epics went the way of the dinosaur til tolkien revived em, and now epics are all over the place, braveheart, gladiator to name a few. also just cuz the library of congress says it doesnt mean anything cuz guess what, theres a lot more countries than the US and they only keep track of US sales.
PS-obviously you do care since you went through the trouble to research this, so dont try to act all cool, im not, this is pretty nerdy, but i dont care and i do care about this argument, at least im not lying to myself

I totally agree with Krongos on this one. Think of any fantasy movie/book in the last 40 years. In some way, it was influenced by tolkien. Look at a fairly comonly know one, Star Wars. Luke (frodo) must destroy the dark side of the force (the ring) to restore peace. He did influence people's lives by influencing everything in them.

if star wars did influence people, it must have influenced people in the wrong way because only made them nerdier...watch triumph the wonder dog with all the star wars nerds and see what i mean.
and the debate about 'who influenced people more' will never end as far as i can see it, so give it up people.

krongos...you are arguing with everyone when you asked for their opinion....you said who do YOU think are the most influential artists...therefore hearing other peoples opinions instead of cheering for your own author... i really don't think tolkein is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century....but with the appreciation you have for his books, it would only make sense that you would...see, its all an opinion, and many opinions are gathered by things people spend time doing and thinking about...so its fine to voice your opinion loudly but i dont think you should harp on someone who disagrees with you.

Adolf Hitler - wrote a Mien Kampf and went to art school. Alwhogh his influence on the world today is more a result of his actions than his creativity, unless you count his ability to speak to the public an art.
Stephen Spielberg (sp?) - Many many movies that influced consumers and the media.
Hugh Hefner - I feel that freedom of expression wouldn't be as liberal as it is today if it weren't for Playboy.
