U.S. Poker Banned...

I searched and didn't find another thread on this. So the great american duche bag, pres Bush sighned legislation today banning all online US poker. How do you Americans feel about this?

the law is kinda messed...
one part of it is about preventing terrorists from smuggling nuclear and chemical weapon inot the US, and there is a random provision that says stuff about poker

but they are predciting that it wont work

The new law won't make it a crime to play poker online; instead it blocks banks from processing gambling winnings – which is why players are now cashing in their virtual chips

While Jeff Markley, with the gambling trade magazine Bluff, has closed his online poker accounts, he says players are plotting ways to move their winnings through third-party web sites.

"They are never going to be able to stop the means of funding gambling accounts," Markley says.

Industry observers fear many Internet gamblers will simply turn to black market on-line casinos.

online poker is definately not banned. it is just illegal for banks to transfer funds to pay off the online debts. therefore they will have to find a way around it.

My bro's a HUGE online player. He quit his job last summer when home from uni so he could play full time. He's made so much money. Got a car, new rims, paid off all his schooling at Uni.
Haha but now he's fucked because of this. We're Canadian, but he has online American acocunts.

It pretty much has alwasy been illegal. Now they are just doing someting about it. I don't think there should be a double standard for laws just because someting is internet based.

No, he was saying that it's completely shutting him down, and thousands of others. Unless he was talking about something else going on too, along with what Bush just did.

I know a kid that has about 40,000 dollars from online poker. Most of it he won before he was even 18. He keeps it in a canadian bank account so he can't be taxed. He'd be in big trouble if anyone found out. I wonder if the IRS monitors newschoolers.

And this isn't all Bush's fault. It was approved 409-2.

why is it that a law about Shipping wepons in containers, also have a clause about online gambling.
laws in australia are usually written and passed by a minister, such as banning online poker would be from the deparment of pubs and clubs which also looks after gambling.
so do you have that sort of thing with ministers or does it always happen that completly unrelated things are written into the same law?

gambling in the states is not a federal matter it is controler by the state governments. thats why they don't have one "deparment of pubs and clubs" to control it, states that have decided they want to permit gambling with then create a body to govern it.

This bill just says that united states banks are not allowed to transfer money to the illegal online gambling companies, banking is a federal matter.

Also i think someone mentioned that this is bushes do-ing, its not, Bob Goodlatte (virginia) is the bill sponsor and then congress voted on it.


The last thing about this bill being linked to Shipping wepons in containers, well I havn't heard anything about that. Maybe that was just taged on to the end of this bill to get it passes as well.

There is absolutly NO connection between terrorism and online gambling. But there is one relation between both:FEAR. Bush is provoking fear in all americans. Like Bush is as intelligent as a doorknob, he cannot think of a better lie to tell the people. He believes that terrorism is the absolute problem of the country. Like the war in Iraq, he had other justification...not terrorism.

It's called a rider. It happens all the time. Its not some scare tactic Bush is using. God you guys are dumb.

NOPE! online poker is totally banned. after tommo you cant deposit money into US poker accounts. then after nov 6th you wont be able to play in any real money games. Thats what the email i got from pokerroom.com said. they said theyll try to find a loop hole and make it legal but until then no online poker. SOOOO the next week and a half im playing SHIT LOADS of poker and try to win another big touney. but after that i looks like ima have to get a job....... FUCK BUSH

According to what I can figure out from that article and the comments here, online poker isn't actually totally banned, although that's what they're trying to do. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here...

That news article posted above states that the law actually doesn't prohibit playing poker online, it just makes it illegal to deposit funds in a poker account with a U.S. credit card, check or money order. Okay, but how are they actually going to control check payments? Make the banks throw out any checks made out to poker websites? Make the websites throw out any US checks? Hard to do, especially when those banks or websites are foreign.

For example, I was surprised to read that pokerroom.com would really send out an email like the one you mentioned, because apparently that website is based in the UK.

My last comment is: Fuck passing legislation like this. Riders are bullshit, pure political tools to appease a certain interest group while pulling the wool over everyone's eyes by not allowing the issue to come to a vote. Is it not a fool's right to lose his money?

As far as I'm concerned, poker night's at my house next week.

yea i thought it just banned different ways to credit online accounts but apparently it prevents all US citizens from playing any real money games or at least it does on pokerroom.com
