Where should I go. I'm planning a 5 day trip to Utah this winter, I live on the East coast so I'm going there for a powder orgy, don't care about who has the best park and I don't think I will have enough money for cat skiing...So I'm askin' the locals, what are the best mountains, where should I go...
i do agree with alta and snowbird being great places for pow, but you gotta know where the hidden stashes are or hike to the backcountry... you should look up Solitude, the name says it all, there's like nobody there but they have sick pow, and tons of nice 20-30 footer cliffs.
Snowbird/Alta look's pretty good, you guy's know any cheap places to stay, I was looking at the super 8 motel on the corner of S 900 and Fort Union Blvd in Midvale....55$ per night, you think I can do better than that, and how far is that from the resort, looks pretty close on the map...
yea i know exactly where that hotel is... you just turn east onto fort union blvd which turns into big cottonwood canyon road, you go all the way to an intersection where there is a 7-11 and turn right onto wasatch blvd (which later becomes little cottonwood canyone rd.) or go straight to go to brighton/solitude. its a pretty good place, you can probably get to snowbird in 20 minutes from there if the weather isn't gnarly/traffic etc.
im going to agree with the guy who said solitude. that place doesnt get tracked out as fast as alta or the bird does. although if you get up early and chase the lifts as the open.... alta is rediculous.
you will have a better time and better bang for your buck if you go to snowbasin or solitude. not to be a dick, but if you are in little cottonwood on a powder day, you will be competing with local after local to get the good lines, you won't be able to beat them out because you'll be at an altitude disadvantage coming from the east coast, and the game will be scavenging and linking powder shots for the rest of the day. Alta/Bird locals are savages for powder.
It should be cheaper to stay up in Ogden, too, and nobody will think any less of you.
ive never skiied in utah, but i'd say alta just from what ive heard from about 3 friends that went there last year, they said it was sick, so thats my reccomendation
then there's always the attempt at bribing a local to take you around to the good stashes with out of state beer, booze, or some form of green...but don't expect them to wait for you at the bottom.
Alta/Snowbird on a big day is like opening day at pipeline. While ur trying to get the snow out of ur bindings me and mrkristofo are gonna be eatin up the lines you were skopin from the tram. ur probably want to hit snowbasin or solitude. that way at least u won't get run over when ur diggin for ur skis...
and snowbasin isn't some bogus hole-in-the-wall mom and pop resort either, it just doesn't get the hype as the cottonwoods. It's legit. They hosted the fucking downhill in the olympics. The mountains around Ogden are favored by southerly/westerly storms, and chances are, as the temperatures heat up (as they did last year) that Snowbasin will go OFF. Global warming sucks. Alta/Bird get the powder notariety that they do from the countless years past of NW flow and lake-effect, but with storms NOT coming from the north as much as they used to, the lake effect shifts to favor snowbasin and the areas around Ogden.
I stayed at that Super 8 last year. It is a really good spot and they keep skiers in mind. I am pretty sure it is owned by the same people who own the Peruvian at Alta so they know whats up. Its really dope. They give you discounts to all the local areas. I did a 5 day stay there last year and we did 1 day at Park City which is a really sick place, but if you dont care at all about park and just want the pow, dont go there. next, Brighton is waayy underated. It has a lot of really sick terrain and mini golf type of stuff. Solitude I havent been to but I heard it is kind of flat compared to the other stuff but still probably pretty good for just fun pow shralping. Alta and Snowbird are just ridiculous. You could have fun just skiing Alta for your whole life. Its that good. Pretty much, you are going to have a hell of a time no matter what. Also, you might want to shred some BC accross the road from alta on mt superior and grizzly gulch
I have also stayed at that super 8. Not bad. But the next night a buddy and I stayed at a relatives house at the base of little cottonwood canyon. Much better digs, and much closer to the mountain. Alta/Snowbird is where it is at!
brighton and solitiude do usually keep freshies a bit longer because A: Brighton is usually a bunch of freeriders and park rats and while some of them do, not a lot of them venture out into the pow to much..
B: Solitude lives up to its name, you can truly not see another skier all day except when your getting on the lift (especially on weekdays)
Alta and Snowbird usually get more snow then Brighton and Solitude but i think if you just want freshies to last as long as possible, go to Solitude.
i would say that u should try bton and solitude, bton is a really fun mtn with tons of good stuff especially on the milly side. solitude is really sick, there is no shortage of steep backcountry type stuff. i would class their terrain kinda between brighton and snowbird, theyve got a good thing going on over there, and its never crowded. i wouldnt even mess with lcc on a nice pow day, you'll get bum rushed by the savage powder hound locals tracking out all the good stuff. by the time u find a good line and come backup it will alreadyt be beat to crap
go to alta and snowbird they have there in like the top 5 in the continental USA for pow alta dont go to canyons or park city cus its really expensive and they get like no snow alta n snowbird also have the best backcountry accessable by lifts so make the right choice and fuck the other moujntains and go to alta and snowbird
on second thought as Mrkristofo said, I would be happy to trade my services for some greenery. I might even wait for you to get the snow out of ur bindings
Recommending inexperienced people (especially east coast people) ski backcountry is never a good idea. You need to know your shit, and you need to be with a crew that can dig each other out.
Ok, thank's for the tips...How's that, 2 days at Alta/Snowbird and two more days at Solitude. Don't worry, I'm not planning to do any BC, and for the locals that are worried, I'm not gonna steal your lines, I have much respect for you guys and so for the mountain...I guess super 8 is the way to go unless a Ski bunny invite me over to spend the night in the Canyon...
Solitude is a good places to start and get your powder leg. It holds fresh lines for a day or two after. It's not as straight up massive as alta or the bird but there is plenty of good terrain, not to mention that most of the local riders are chill and nobody gives a shit if you crack a beer for the lift ride up. check out honycomb canyon, you will be giggling like a school girl and gasping for air while choking on Utah's finest. Many lines to be had in the trees too....do your mom a favor and wear a helmet.
I didn't really find that to be the case at all, you can find your own shit especially if youre with someone who knows where they are going. As for staying at the Super 8, if theres a big storm while youre there you might not be able to get to alta/snowbird because theyll close the road up the canyon.
