So I completely tore my ACL and also tore my meniscus 4 months ago skiing. I've been living with it, uncomfortably, and am having surgery in 7 days. Anybody have ACL surgery before? How bad is it? I know i'll have physical therapy for 6 months and shit, and won't be able to ride until the end of December pretty much...but for those of you that can help, when will it feel normal again?
haha no, initially i was told to wait for the swelling to go down, then when i was schedule to get my MRI, my doctor had a blood clot, so I had to wait 6 more weeks, then i got the MRI, and needed a second opinion. This shit has just been dragged out forever.
I tore mine middle of last season and kept skiing and made it alot worse. I am having surgery in the next couple of weeks. Ask dylhole or kcooley for advice. They have been through it.
i did that last year and let me tell you it is by far one of the most painful things you will ever experience. For the first week i couldnt move my leg at all, i couldnt even lift it up it was so painful. BUt pretty much when u have it, your life is over for about the next 4 months. You cant run, walking takes about two months. But having it in the summer is the best becuase u cant ski, and when its really hot outside you can just sit in the basement and take the strong medication. The on wthing i dont know if they told you, is that even after this your knee will never be back to 100% but it can get close enough that you can do everything you used to with minimal pain sometimes.. but if you hit it again not a good scene at all. So ya enjoy this, its a fun time
I had acl and meniscus repair 7 weeks ago and the first few days are brutal but after that its not to painful and you get some awsome drugs so its really not that bad...my summer is ruined like urs probably is but aleast u can ski next winter. once you get past the first few days its not all that bad
for me the first like 3 days were horrible... i was on hydrocone (or something like that).. 2 pills every 4 hours or something like that until i felt i didnt need them. it hurts sooo bad if you try to put weight on it the first day or two. and they're gonna give you crutches. my doc said to use them as long as i felt like it..which was about 5 days haha..they might want you to use them for like 6 weeks which would suck... but yea. oh and also everyone reacts to anestesia differently..when i woke up after surgery i couldnt stop shaking and i was really cold...and every time i tried to talk i started crying haha it was horrible. but they can give you stuff for hte shaking that works right away. it'll be like a droning sort of pain..really faint but achey. thats how it was for me anyway..
and DO YOUR REHAB!!!!! and yes your summer is shot. you get to do rehab for the whole thing. i have to do serious weight training and stuff this summer to get ready for ski season. i had surgery on my acl/meniscus on st patty's day and i have full range of motion and everything, but im still a lot weaker than i was before. and im still hesitant to do quick movements with my legs. like pivots and stuff.
if you have your meniscus repaired then you can't put any weight on it for a month to six weeks, otherwise you might be able to walk really soon after the surgery, but its three to four months after the surgery until you can actually do other activities like running.
i guess it also really varies person to person. i tore my lateral meniscus and acl and i was walking (well..limping) without crutches 5 or 6 days out of surgery. i had a limp for a few weeks, but it felt okay to an extent.
...hm no it wasnt removed..they tried to fix it by putting screws in it but they werent sure if that would work, so i have to get an mri later to see if it healed. and if it didnt heal they have to go back in and remove it...so maybe it was just a partial tear of the meniscus if i could put weight on it and everything
I don't want to bore you all who don't know my story, but I did the same thing, ACL/MCL/Meniscus/Pl Corner party. It was terrible. 2 months for swelling then surgery.
Basically, the couch for a week and a half after surgery will be your bestfriend. Get a lot of good food, DVD's, a laptop with wireless internet, a cell phone, and a hot girlfriend to come and visit...then you'll have a big fun party on crutches for a while.
i personally never have but my brother who is in the army did, he is out of the army national rugby team till at least middle of the winter and he cant do any training in the summer, im not sure if that is the army being over cautiouse but they are having him wait a full year before he can join back onto the national rugby team...i would say take your time as much as you want to ride wait or you will regret it later
had mine done last june. opted for 7 months of physio instead of 6 just to make sure. one month after that without warning my knee falls apart(inside). so ya just pray to God it holds and make sure you do your physio so you at least give yourself a chance.
i tore my acl mcl and lateral meniscus in february...had surgery with a hamstring graph in march and have been rehabbing since..i skied 8 weeks after surgery in mammoth and was fine..no jibbing just skiing around, but it held up...now im doing 6 days a week in the gym with a trainer to get all my strength back by august when i go to new zealand..basically DO all the rehab you can..you will be glad you did
i dunno about everyone else but i got a graph from my hamstring and the doc says it shows the best long term results...
and after school's out (thursday) i'm dedicating my entire summer to rehab so it doesnt happen again..thats my main concern..that i'll eff it up again.
im also worried i wont be able to hit rails because i wont be mentally prepared to go through it again
Hey guys
I messed up my knee pretty bad too (acl, mcl and the ligiamente behind the acl)...
ligamentes was messed up, just the lcl was ok... the meniscus was torned two times and the cartilage is messed up to...
so it happened at january the 31st
now it is about 10 or 11 weeks after the surgery, I got special treatments in germany, so my knee is doing a good job...
I had the same s*** 2 years ago and 7 of 8 doctors sad you never will ski again with this knee, the other one was my nice surgent, he told me you need to train realy hard!!! So I skied and messed up the other knee...
so it depense from knee to knee and how you are training...
my friend completely tore his ACl, MCL and one other liagment in his knee about 4 weeks ago.. it was the second time gettnig surgery on his ACL
anyways, he got surgery a couple days ago and can almost walk around already and he said it was virtually painless..
wow man ure storie, is the same as mine, i torn mine 21st of january, and i just had my surgerie on the 8 of june. right now im doing fine, i just start physio 2day, i can bend my knee about 90 degre and put it flat.
my leg i about 3 cm in diameter bigger then the other one.
i changed my band yesterday at the doctor office, that was 5 day after surgeri. i tought it be something big, but its not that big of a deal.
I'm 17, and I've had 6 knee surgeries. Last one was an ACL reconstruct that got infected and required 6 weeks of IV antibiotics 3x a day for 6 hours total. Sucked ass. Best thing I can say is treat rehab like training, and make small goals, like degrees in your range of movement. Do lots of spinning on a stationary bike, and get back in the gym asap. I tore my knee a week before national champs, got an MRI the next day, surgery in a week, then the infection and hospital stay/IV treatment for 6 weeks, and Im back on snow at 10.5 weeks because I was religious about my rehab. It'll be like nothing happened in a year or so.
