This is the revised edition, I decided that starting over with a new thread would be cleaner. Ok, revised through your comments and suggestions, this is Trick Guide: Version 2.


Before reading this, I’d just like you to know that this was my best attempt at this, and that it took me many hours to get this together. I have a huge archive of good NS video’s on my computer, but its damn hard finding the original pages in the video section of NS.

Another cool note here too: These are all video’s from NS members! Way to go guys, some of these video’s are damn classy. I kinda had fun making this because I got to see how much talent our members have. We rock! Check out the video’s below if you don’t believe me.

(Disclaimer: If you see yourself in a video that I’ve used and want to have it removed (for some reason I really cannot imagine, you did post it for the public) then just PM me, I’ll talk to a Mod and get it removed for you.)

Cork
A cork is a off axis spin that is leaned back, but so that the rider does not go inverted at any point. It is a popular trick, and many pro’s and amateurs do these very well.

Bio
A forward corking non-inverted spin. Note the lean the rider has forwards at about 360. Also, see CR Johnson in SM2, SM3 or Propaganda, he does them best.

D-spin
Set the same way a cork is, but is more leaned back. A d-spin is essentially any cork where you become inverted. In all of these videos note how the feet will go above the head. Evan Raps does these very well, also see Mike Douglas.

Rodeo
A rodeo is not an off axis spin like a cork, d-spin or bio. It is a spin with a FULL inversion, aka, the riders feet at some point in the spin go directly OVER his or her head. See Mark Abma in Yearbook for a very sick and slowed down Rodeo 7. Also, Mike Wilson rules at these, see Ready, Fire, Aim for some huge ones.

Flatspin
Flatspins are very close to rodeos. They are thrown almost the exact same, but the difference is that in a flatspin, the rider never gets completely inverted. Heres a way to think about it: A line extending through you from your head to your toes when you stand up. In a rodeo, this line ends up completely inverted at some point (although your feet can be somewhere else, like leaned back in a tail or a mute or something) while in a flatspin, this line never reaches true vertical. The line between what is a rodeo and a flatspin is understandably very blurry, especially when one considers tweaked grabs and such.

Misty
A Misty is the counterpart of the Rodeo. It is a spin with a front flip. Note in these how you can see the skis go OVER the persons head and wrap around.

Underflips
An underflip can easily be mistaken for a rodeo or a misty. It’s an odd rotation: a 90 degree turn off the lip, followed by a lincoln loop up the hill (head faces jump followed by feet) to another 90, landing backwards. See niklas karlstrom in teddybear crisis up the step-up, or in X off of a small snowbank. Vincent Dorion also does these well.

Overflips
Baisically the opposite of an underflip, commonly mistaken for a misty 5. 90, lincoln loop downhill (feet face jump followed by head) to another 90, landing backwards. see mike wilson in ready, fire, aim or in superpark 2. These do look almost exactly like misty’s. Searching on NS, I could only find one video of an overflip, and it wasn’t that great of an example. We need your video!

Backflips and Frontflips

Lincoln Loops
A single inversion, with no spin. Basically, just a cartwheel, where the rider flips to the side, doing a barrel roll. These are usually done off cliffs, especially when Seth Morrison is around.

Kangaroo Flip
Jon Olsson, Sweedish wonderboy, pulled off this trick at the Jon Olsson Invitational this year (2006), blowing the other simple spins out of the water. It’s a double flatspin by many peoples terminology. With Mike Wilson pulling off double corks, expect to see more of these ‘double inversions’ in the near future. This will no doubt make this guide a whole lot longer.

Does anyone one think that names for tricks are rediculously stupid? besides being able to go tell your bro's what you did that day is there really any point. Now most peoples answer to this is "The are important for judging competitions" which is true to some extent. I think we would all agree though that even if you do a switch 14 doesn't necessarily mean it was good looking, or even more difficult that a 9 with a really poked grab.

In my opinion everyone does things differently, and it is this variety that makes our sport so interesting. Having standards for what a trick "should" look like fucks things up. Also, I am from a mountain where many of our hits are natural or slightly packed down. For any one who has skied some backcountry features you quickly learn that you just cant do some tricks of some features. A three may not work but you might be able to get a rodeo 7, there is so many changing factors its hard to tell sometimes what your manuever is actually going to end up lookin like.

Finally, I think it slows down the pace in which new skiers can learn. This is open to your own opinion, but have you ever been nervous to try something new because it sounds difficult or has a really long fuckin name, but when you try it you quickly find out that it was much easier than you thought it would be. I know i meet a lot of people that won't try something because it sounds gnarly, and i dont think thats the way it should be.

At the end of the day I believe personally i would be a much better skier if i never learned any of this bullshit and just went with what i felt. And i wouldnt have to listen to how "sick" everyone has been gettin for the past 12 years of my life.

yeah dude..and while we're at it- fuck names !! why should we name people? everyone is just so unique and different why should we dampen their qualities with "names"...

so i'm not sure what you're saying- you think skiing isn't progressing because people are saying "cork 7" instead of "7 layed out on your back"?

and wtf does that have to do with backcountry? your 3 looks like a rodeo 7? then what is wrong with just calling it a rodeo 7...

On most sites if the vids don't get enough views or for whatever reason they get deleted.

It'd be awesome if they'd be up again, because I still can't tell the difference between a rodeo, d-flip, flatspin and an underflip.

I can only tell if it's in ultra-slowmo but I really can't just tell like: oh that's that...

It's hard lol :P

I'd be down to update this, but I dont want to spend all my time searching for example videos. If people want to start taking sections (like cork 720, provide three good example vids, try to have the video just be the lone trick and not an edit we have to skip to a certain part in), PM me with them and the links, I'll start compiling everything.

And its cool that you can do some of these tricks, but please try to send me the best example you can, not just you doing something.

False. The original kang was a double flat 9. Dub rodeos have been done since then, but they are harder and aren't called kang flips. Here's the classic jon olsson kangaroo flip. When he sets the flip he'll leans slightly backwards into it.


Here's an example of an actual dub rodeo. Chris Turpin did them all the time. The best example is at 1:53 or the way he sets the triple at the end. Notice it's a more agressive and forward set than a flatspin.


Also Justin Dorey does some textbook double rodeos. Here's a dub 10 at 6:32:


Rodeos and flatspins can appear similar. The grey line that separates the two would be a true lincoln loop with a spin. Nobody really does those anymore though.

I'm going to probably get hated on for saying this, but as far as I can see there is absolutely no point in differentiating between rodeos and flatspins. They are thrown so similarly and the line between them is so grey there are really no definite differences. Everyone has their own definition, and I think that there would be a lot less pointless fucking arguments on NS and YouTube if people either ended the use of one of the terms or people just agreed that they are the same fucking thing. /rant

jon's is the most inverted, i'd say his is a dub rode. the rest are flats. rodeos : inverted. flats: not

I love how double flips have just made the rodeo/under flip/flatspin more inconsequential over the years. Also, whatever happened to the d-spin and its rarer counterpart, the forward thrown rotation, called the...?

ok here it clearly says rodeos go completely upside down. and i thought this guide was what most people considered correct so how is it everyone's calling slightly more tilted flatspins a different name? it seems what everyone calls a rodeo is what this calls a flat, corks and dspins are considered the same thing but rodeos in this are what we call dspins.

That's because d-spins have been distorted over the years, they are basically just a cork where you go a little upside down. The other problem now is with wackflips, everyone calls them flat threes and they aren't. Also the definition of rodeo has changed slightly because they can be thrown a little more flat than straight upside down and still be a rodeo as long as you do go inverted.
