Before reading this, I’d just like you to know that this was my best attempt at this, and that it took me two hours to get this together. I have a huge archive of good NS video’s on my computer, but its damn hard finding the original pages in the video section of NS.

Another cool note here too: These are all video’s from NS members! Way to go guys, some of these video’s are damn classy. I kinda had fun making this because I got to see how much talent our members have. We rock! Check out the video’s below if you don’t believe me.

(Disclaimer: If you see yourself in a video that I’ve used and want to have it removed (for some reason I really cannot imagine, you did post it for the public) then just PM me, I’ll talk to a Mod and get it removed for you.)

Cork
A cork is a off axis spin that is leaned back, but so that the rider does not go inverted at any point. It is a popular trick, and many pro’s and amateurs do these very well.

Bio
A forward corking non-inverted spin. Note the lean the rider has forwards at about 360. Also, see CR Johnson in SM2, SM3 or Propaganda, he does them best.

(it’s a switch bio 10, but it works, note the lean in the rotation)

D-spin
Set the same way a cork is, but is more leaned back. A d-spin is essentially any cork where you become inverted. In all of these videos note how the feet will go above the head. Evan Raps does these very well, also see Mike Douglas.

Rodeo
A rodeo is not an off axis spin like a cork, d-spin or bio. It is a spin with a FULL inversion, aka, the riders feet at some point in the spin go directly OVER his or her head. Rodeo’s are essentially a backflip with a spin. See Mark Abma in Yearbook for a very sick and slowed down Rodeo 7. Also, Mike Wilson rules at these, see Ready, Fire, Aim for some huge ones.

Misty
A Misty is the counterpart of the Rodeo. It is a spin with a front flip. Note in these how you can see the skis go OVER the persons head and wrap around. (Note; some people call these overflips. However, I find this term misleading, because you would think that the opposite of an overflip is an underflip, or a rodeo. However, this is not the case, as you will see from the Underflip section)

Flair’s and Underflips
First, about Flaires: Flairs are essentially backflip 180’s. They are usually done in the pipe (Heres Ian Cosco, watch his third hit for a good one: http://media.nscdn.com/uploads/member/videos/9591Ianhugeflairrun.mov), but can be done off a normal jump. Because a 360 in a pipe would land you switch however, landing a flair in the pipe you come out going normal. Thus, flairs off a park jump have you landing switch. (Sorry that’s confusing, I’ve reworded it twice and that’s the best I’ve got). Heres a video:

People also commonly call this an underflip, so I’ll agree to that. This is not a rodeo 5 (look at the way the rotation is set, there is a difference). People either need to define Underflips as either Rodeo 5’s or as Flairs. A Flair is not a Rodeo 5: yet people commonly call both Underflips.

So that it. I personally don’t use “underflip” at all. In my opinion, it’s a bad term all around. There are many kinds of spins and inverts that go “under” but they aren’t all the same type (d-spin’s and rodeo’s for example – some guy will always claim your d-spin is an underflip). Thus, I hope we can get past the whole “underflip” thing and just use more appropriate terms. If you want to call a flair out of the pipe an underflip, go ahead, just keep your damn definitions consistent.



Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this brief and far from ultimate trick dictionary and guide. As always, I expect your criticism and mockery, but I hope that this will help clear things up for some people. I wish I could edit this as we get better video’s, but alas. Maybe if a mod takes pity or if this gets stickied.

UNDERFLIP
not a backflip 180, but rather a 90, followed by a lincoln loop up the hill (head faces jump followed by feet) to another 90, landing backwards. see niklas karlstrom in teddybear crisis up the step-up, or in X off of a small snowbank.
OVERFLIP
baisically the opposite of an underflip, commonly mistaken for a misty 5. 90, lincoln loop downhill (feet face jump followed by head) to another 90, landing backwards. see mike wilson in ready, fire, aim or in superpark 2.

Exactly right. In TBC(I think Nik Karlstrom shares a segment with Becker) he throws what I understand to be a perfect underflip. I think the difference between underflip and overflip is just whether or not the lincoln loop goes with the first 90 degree turn.

you've got it right.

although imo when i throw a rodeo i throw back of the jump and drop my left sholder to set the rotation off the axis.

to set a flatspin i concentrate on the rotation and let myself sort of drift to flat. that doesn't make a whole lot of sense but it feels different neways.

some of your rodes i would class as flat BUT it's a sliding sale and a tweaked grab will change the look of a trick so much.

for under and over flips check shane mcconkey from a few years ago i forget which movie... they are similar to mistys and rodeos but NOT off axis. 90-lincoln-90. under is leftside lincoln. over is rightside lincoln (assuiming you spin to the left).

This was messaged to me today, watch Corey Vanular's first hit. Perfect Flatspin 720, you can see how he doesnt get completely inverted at any point in the air, and remains more on his side. I'll see if I can make a video of this so you wont have to link to the Orage site. Revisions will occur this weekend, once I get some time back in my life. Being sick on finals week sucks.

Flat does not equal rodeo. We've already discussed this. See above.

The way the rotation thing works with 180's and 540's is that the actual flipping rotation counts as 360 degrees. So then the last 180 is added to that. It's pretty wierd but if you watch their whole body it DOES rotate 540.

I see a flatspin as when the skiier is laying on their side in the air, and essentially doing backflips like this. Tanner does a good one in his part in SM3.

Good post.

Yes, an underflip is set like you would a lincoln, except you set it behind you a little, so it throws you around 180 degrees throughout the lincoln, making you land switch.

Well, if it makes it any easier, he got his head below his feet, so he was inverted, which is rodeo. It's too bad a lot of you kids can't water ramp in the Summer...that's how you find out what trick is what in a hurry.

The best way to think about underflips is setting it like a lincoln loop but instead of looking at the horizon when you rotate, look back at your feet and you will land switch.

UNDERFLIP- 90 degree rotation to lincoln loop to 90 degree rotation (note that the lincoln loop is thrown down to the left if you spin lift and visa versa so that the lincoln loop flips under as opposed to an overflip which is 90 to lincoln (thrown over) to 90, watch pete O's overflip)

if you want a flat spin just check out dave bishop in 7up i beleive, he does a forward flatspin so nice and perfect or really i guess you could check the blue mountain triple challenge videos, he has that shit dialed 5s and 7s, they are sweet ass flat spins!
