K2 Back Nine/Marc Andre

Personally I feel that no one should win the K2 back nine and that the money for the winner should be donated to Standstrong.org

I think we should all rally for this to help Marc out.

that's a really good idea, given that he participated in the back nine. Or at least half of the prize or something.

chill, its weds night at 1am. of course he deserves it but i dont think turning over prize money to charity is going to happen. thats just taking money out of the hands of the deserving athletes who won it and thats not fair cuz skiers dont make much as it is.

Even though K2 back9 is wonderful and all, this one was very tragic. The loss of Reddy Knape, Marc Andre, I am oh so sad. :(

Another good idea would be 4 tgr or someone to put out a marc andre dvd and donate all the proceed to marcs recovery, you know damn well we would all by it and they prob have tons of footage of him killin it that never made any of the movies

however jibremix, wouldnt the athletes possibly recognize how lucky they are to be living that lifestyle, as well as consider that any one of them could be in Marc Andre's situation, and act appropriately. for sure they took time out of their season, but one might think that they would be grateful to have the opportunity to do so in the first place.

Anybody who was at the back 9 to work or compete must be insane to be motivated by money, cause the reality is, the piece of the pie in the freeski world really isnt that big.

is the spirit of the sport really that dead? is the winner going to walk off with the money and send it to his broker to have it invested in the stock market, or is he going to buy a few rounds for his bros and have a good night?

you tell me...

k2 has a lot of money. unltimately its their decision what happens with the money, so they should just match the winnings and make everyone happy!

if the athleates are perticipating in a competition for there own prize money, K2 can not just take it away and give it to someone else.

skiing pros arent exactly rich. the guy who wins the K2 backnine probably needs the money too. It not really a sport that sets you up financially for life and you have the opportunity to give away a 10,000 dollar price freely.

I think volkl being the money bags that they are should be the one putting together a fundraiser or donating money for marcs cause. I dont know if they have or not, but they def. should.

The point here is that K2 wouldn't be taking the money away, they'd be matching it.

It probably won't happen, which is sad. But like JibRemix said, that's just not the way the world works. Donate money and keep hoping.

i think if the winner is a half-way decent peson, he will donate at least a couple thousand because the total prize is like $30,000 isn't it? none of these skiers need $30,000 enough to not give money to a good cause

if it happens, i feel it will be done solely by the individual competitors. yes it would be nice to see a large portion of the $$$ go to charity, but why not donate it to Marc's family directly as to aid them. this would not require as much donation from the athletes themselves personally, and it would go directly to someone that needs it.

two things:

1) volkl should have some legal monetary obligation to marc-andre based on the fact that he was under contract and injured himself while fulfilling his working duties. i would assume that they would def have to honour his existing contract. as well, an actuary would be useful to evaluate the potential earnings of which marc-andre is deprived based on his injury. the question all comes down to, who is responsible for what happened? was it an accident, was there poor judgment on the part of a guide? what type of fault was committed?

for sure volkl has the insurance to deal with fulfilling belliveau's contract. the question is, can marc andre be compensated beyond that?

2) any skier who walks with the earnings without giving anything ( especially if it's 30 000$), is a pretty selfish dude in my opinion, especially considering that any one of them could be in marc-andre's shoes.

however, maybe belliveau doesnt want the charity from his fellow skiers. maybe health insurance will cover the costs. maybe this, maybe that. maybe the guy who wins the money is in debt and needs to pay off a mortgage on a house. there are a million undetermined factors in this situation, and it isnt up to this community to guess what they are.

punisher makes some valid points.

furthermore, why is everyone telling the back 9 athletes what to do, just because they are in the same comp as MA. its not like he died in that. fuck, no-one should feel compelled, but it would be nice to think if those in a position to donate would do so generously...

ok it's a good idea but it won't happen and I don't really think it should. It's prize money that goes to the winner. Maybee the winner can decide to give it to him. It's the winners moeny and he can decide to do what he wants with it. Maybee you should consider giving him thousands of dollars

As horrible JibRemix sounds, he is def right. It would be great that the money could be donated to MA. But, skiers have to make a living, and organisers want to give the money to winner of the competition.
Skiers pay big money and use their sponsor in order to win. If nothing is a stake, the competion will be a flop. It sounds selfish, but that is how it must work...

when MAB signed with volkl, im sure he signed a waiver that outlined the dangers of the sport, and killed the possibility of any compensation. jibremix is right, its really bravado to say that k2 should match the winnings, but, thats not how the real world works. yeah k2 has a lot of money, but honestly, the suit that runs the whole k2 corporation would much rather have a new bentley, instead of seeing one of the athletes signed on one of the numerous teams that he has never met, and never will meet, get some compensation for a life changing injury like this.

if the money was to be donnated i think it shuld be donnated to the heart and stroke foundation or something since teddy actually died there and it should be more in memory/tribute to him. I am sure standstroung will get lots of fundraising anyways.

Yeah I'm sure all of you would give up the prize money, if everyone on newschoolers kick 10$ marcs way he would be sitting pretty, no pun intended. Athletes like Marc get paid quite a bit from their ski sponsors, I know a kid who rides from Salomon and gets a 30,000$ check every year for a travel budget, he's a big name but not the biggest and he makes bank. I would hope that volkl would publicly make a large donation to the standstrong considering it's probably tax deductable and really good PR. But in the end we'll see.

dweezieast, man i totally disagree with you. if you ask me, it's a work related incident, no less so than if the guy pressing the skis in the factory got his arm stuck in the machine and had it chopped off. he was performing the duties outlined in his contract, and he should be compensated accordingly. this isn't london during the industrial revolution; the employer cannot be allowed allowed to tell one of his employees to screw off if they get hurt during a work-related function.

anyway, if you ask me, that's how i see it. it's pretty simple contractual law.

I hate to say this and hopefuly Marc would agree...

Teddy Knape passed away while helping with the production of the Back Nine. he died on hill filming...if Marc was not hurt shouldn't you be saying the money should goto him and his family? And now with this new terrible injury, should it go to both?

Let what happens, happen and stop arguing.

RIP Teddy, Get Well Marc.

saying that the money SHOULD go to Marc or Teddy's family just isn't right. The money SHOULD go to the winner of the event, as planned and advertised. The way the athletes perceived it to be when they chose to compete. As tragic as Teddy's death and Marc's injury are, they are in no way the responsibility of the Back 9, the competitiors of that event, or sponsors. Sponsored skiers are not employees of their sponsors' corporations, but independent representitives contracted to wear their products as they do what they do (ski, compete, film, etc.)
Now, if any of the winners or sponsors chose to donate to Teddy's family, or standstrong.org, or Marc, that would be completely their own decision, not out of lawful obligation or ethical/karmic obligation.
I'm sure whoever wins the back 9 could use the money they earned to pay their own bills.

Man... i didn't read all of your posts.... but this is some serious pressure on the actual winner. i know skiers don't make much money, so they'll take what they can get, but they have a fallen comrade. I hope they donate it.

He was only working if he was filming. That's why videographers and photographers have the athletes fill out and sign waivers that protect them from being held responsible for this kind of thing.
