Snowing Pres Day Weekend???

I'm coming up from L.A. to ski in Tahoe for the weekend. My question is how good is highway maintenance when going to Tahoe from the Bay Area? If its snowing, are chains required on the roads to Squaw/Northstar/Alpine or does Caltrans clear the roads constantly. I know Highway 80 is usually kept clear and even when it's snowing, I've never had to put on chains even on 2wd vehicles. How but the highways to the above resorts? I have 4wd, but will I still need chains?
Thanks for the replies.

If the snow accumulates you will need chains. Especailly going up to Alpine. If the snow sticks on the interstate there will be a stop point on I-80 where you will be required to put chains on before proceeding. Buy your chains now or you will get ripped off later when you have no choice.

i was born in the bay (don't live there now)...go tell J.T. Holmes that he's not welcome in tahoe, he's from Palo Alto. I know we're hijacking the thread, but i hope you're joking.

and to return to the topic of the thread. if it snows more than a little bit you will need chains. especially goin up alpine meadows road. that road is sketch. ive had a car almost slide back into me while sitting still. and ive seen someone get taken the fuck out after fishtailing into the middle of the road. definately need chains of 4wd.

Gaper^.. im form the valley , ALL of Dcrew is from the bay, my girlfriend is from the bay. obviously becca was kidding.... anyways yeah though if you live in the bay and HAVE to rent skis to ski then please go to boreal. truthfully i dont care as long as they stay out of my way in the park and i know for sure your not gonna find them in good runs like keyhole, if i did though i wouldnt be mad, id be impressed and admire them for a minute then go get patrol for them when they kiss the rocks.

^hahaha...yeah, you'd be surprised at the talent that some weekend warriors have. not everyone is privelaged enough to live in the tahoe area, count your blessings. but yeah, bay area gapers are why i mainly ski weekdays.

Cause i'm going to be in the Bay Area that weekend... And, long weekends at Mammoth suck... Too many L.A. gapers are there and the lines are three times longer than normal...

Yeah, because long weekends around here have no lines.

haha, thats probably the reason I'm not going up from SFC because its Presidents weekend. The one weekend people go when they only go skiing the whole year. If you hvae 4wd they'll let you through usually, just go slow and don't be one of those 'i'm so cool i have 4wd'. Most cars off the side of the road are SUV's, not cars with chains.

Trust me, Mammoth is worst. Pretty much all of So Cal is going to be there. Theres no snow right now at So Cal resorts so everyone is making the drive up to Mammoth. And, since Mammoth is the only resort in that area (people don't tend to go to June Mtn), lift lines get really long. I've waited 45+ minutes at one of the lifts and that was just a regular weekend.
All times are Eastern (-4); Currently it's 11:17AM
