I'm guessing no one here has been ski patrol at the bird or alta. I'm talking an EMT class right now so that I can work next winter as a Patrol in Tahoe, but I've always wanted to work at the bird. Those of you who ski it regularly, do you think I'd need avalanche classes? What are my chances without previous patrol experience? I can ski everything at snowbird, so that's not a problem. Thanks.
I talked to a patroller there who said they hire new people, but Ive also heard that you need an in. some people start volunteering to help patrol on there days off, and that sort of thing. After seeing all the bullshit they deal with dayin and day out i dont think i would like it. I have heard some horror stories, but doing control work would be fun.
I'm only planning on spending one winter before i go to grad school, but i'm hoping my personality and education level might sneak me in. Otherwise i'm pretty sure i can get a job in tahoe, not to shabby, but snowbird Patrol has been a dream job for a while now.
i was also considering the same thing a year back. from what i've heard from the bird patrollers is that it's pretty difficult to get a job there. everyone wants to patrol alta or bird, alta especially. i'd suggest heading over to solitude. the resort is just as nice and even better on powder days.
man you should patrol for squaw. aside from the national ski patrol, the patrol ar mostly super chill dudes. people smoke with them and break all sorts of rules and they are cool about it.
