How do you compress a jpg file so you can put it in your profile?

I can't upload my images, a screen flashes saying that the files need to be a certain size and jpg or some other format.

if you're using paint, make sure there is no white around the picture, and save as a jpg (or the smallest file format possible aka not .bmp) if you use photoshop, size it and save for web.
