"It frusterates me when I see kids in the park and they can't do a single turn in between jumps- just speed check at 540. At home, the really good young skiers are the ones who race, because they learn where to stand in the boot, how to carve a turn and make their skis work. They know the correct body position and where to put their hips and shoulders.

The kids in the park everyday, they're terrible skiers. It will take them a long time to become good skiers. If you look at some pros now when they try to ski in the backcountry, there arn't too many who can ski away from a backcountry jump"

yeah that is true the racers usually start at such a young age that they just get good at skiing in general and they have more confidence on skis and they just know how to ski flat out they pick up newschooling a lot faster than someone who just started

racers are usually better skiers, but most are such pricks, it doenst even matter how they ski, because they ruin the mtn for everyone

These "kids" are having fun. Isn't that the what skiing is about? If Henrik wants to be so high and mighty as to put down kids that arent as good as he is, or say that he is better at skiing away from BC jumps than "most of the pros out there", then let him. If a kid wants to hang in the park all day, and that's what skiing is for them, that's great. That is what makes skiing what it is: deciding how you want to do it, you're not on a team, you don't have to do anything. You can ski, without people judging you for doing something wrong. All these people that decide to criticize on others who "can't ski" need to get off their high horse and realize that skiing is about fun, not who is the best. Whew.

I've resisted saying anything on this site, but that is the most honest thing I have heard in a long time. I don't care where you learn, but you gotta learn to carve a turn.
The average park monkey looks like a rank-ass beginer skiing down to the lift: skid to the left, skid to the right, do a stupid spin, ski fakey for a while, spin back around and continue to skid.
I'd bet the house that if Bode Miller worked at it for about a month he could place way higher in a comp in the park then any park moneky could ever place in a world cup downhill.

Henrick is a very elitest thinker, if he wants to discriminate than fine, if it makes him feel better to put some distance between him and everyone else so be it. But he should remember not everyone was as privileged as he was and had the opputrunity to start skiing at a young age. Last thing, do you really have to bring discrimination on the mountain? When did discrimination bring anything good? I think Henrick is just trying to feel cooler by distancing himself from everyone else so he can feel better about himself.

um..................yeah i think thats bs Henrik is just telling it like it is and yes skiing is about having fun but knowing how to ski is what he's talking about and you look at most kids who grew up in the park the quote describes how they ski not there skill or anything and for the most part its true next season go to the park and pick out a park kid and a racer (who doesn't race anymore) and you can see the diff.

Admittedly, it's true that you can pick out the park skiers from the racers; but why is it so repulsive that some kids can't ski the "traditional proper" way. Why can't everyone do it their own unique way? Is it because Henrick believes that we will enjoy ourselves more if we knew how to ski the "proper" way? If so, since when was it Henricks job to tell other people whats fun.

There is no "proper way" to ski, despite what the PSIA ski instructors say.
Every great skier has inovated skiing over the years, I'm talking about Werner, Stein, Killey, Wong, the Mahres, Plake, Johnson, schmidt, Hall, Miller, etc. They all made turns that people, at the time, thought were out of control, but they all could (and can) carve a real turn.
Yeah, your right skiing is about having fun and every one should be welcome, but to say that learning how to make a real turn and carve a ski doesn't matter is complete bullshit.

Shut the fuck up and take your candy ass to racing where it belongs. All they do is fucking cry all day that other people are worse because they get competition by people who just strap on a pair of skis and just flip themselves with talent and a pair of balls. Well guess what, I fucking started in the park a year after I started to learn how to ski, and I have been dying to hit up a mountain ever since. But guess what? I don't have the money/time to do so and I have more fun in the park. Get the fuck over it, all of you morons who are mountain riders and insult park rats are nothing more then elitest snobs.

He has a very valid point. What he says is true. BUT, and thats a big but, I don't think it really think its a topic worth debating.

As it was said before, skiing IS about having fun.

And if someone likes skiing park all day and not caring about how technically perfect their skiing is, well, more power to em. At least they are out there enjoying themselves ight?

"Posers" "Newbs" "Joeys" what ever you want to call them... these are some of the most core people on the hill. They don't give a shit what anyone thinks about them, they are just out there skiing, having a good time.

The people that have been skiing for a while and are trying oh so hard to "make it" and be cool, are the ones that really anoy me. Its like "hey man, loose the 'tude and just go skiing."

that was damn smart man. i dont like the posts or threads u make sometime, but, u just brought up a very good point. henrik also made a good point, cuz this year, i was looking at a video shot of me doing a 5, then skiing away, and my on ground style looked like shit. over the course of the year, i improved it more and more

I, in the opinion of many others, am a really good skier when it comes to carving and mogul turns on flats and shit but when it comes to actual park i need work. i used to hate the fact that i raced but then i quit, went to frteestyle and it paid off in the longrun

Can I explain to you why it's better to carve then skid your turns? That's like trying to explain to a virgin why real sex is better then jerking off. Until you've done it, you really won't understand.
You tell me, when you're driving a car on snow do you like the feeling and control all-wheel drive gives you when you go around a turn or do you like to drive a two-wheel drive car and have the ass end sliding all over the road?
Learning how to carve a turn is just part of the natural progression of learning how to ski. I've got nothing against people who like to hang out in the park all day long, but I do have an issue with the newbie retards that bomb down the hill from the park to the lift on their twin tips, barely in control.

He has a good point. I skied for like 8 years before I even started doing tricks and it pisses me off when I see a shitty skier in the park. Actually I never see any skiiers I dont know in the park at my hill so never mind.

word dave, the key is havin fun.

i do feel that these kids who ski park all day, and can't "ski" as you people say, do need to relaize that that is just one aspect of a sick skier, and to be the best, you need to be able to ski any place any time. i just don't like people sitten there saying this person deserves this or that or whatever, and they are trying to become pro, and they can't even get off the now non-existant tram at jackson, and rip the peak.

to be a pro nowadays, shouldn't just require you to be able to slide some rails, hit some jumps and ski the park. pros, should be able to schralp the gnar gnar as well.

That is where this is going. eventualy a pro should be able to get out of the helli, make some turns up top drop that 40footer with a smooth 3 then hit the windlip down low and throw a sick 5, riding backward to the helli. that is the future

and sure not everybody is going to be able to do that, and not everybody will even want to do that, but that should be the drive, to be a good "skier" as a whole.

granted it is good to have fun and i agree with that 100% but what happened to the skiing aspect of the sport i think when they are good at park they should work on their carving skills so they dont look like some idiot going down the mountain when they aren't in the park

and he knows everyone he calls 'park kids' can obviously TURN on there skis or they wouldnt be in the park in the first place. no need for exageration.

bottom line is You dont need to be a racer to have fun. 'Fundementals' is what killed skiing in the first place, you dont see that shit in snowboarding thats why its 1000x more popular and most of the world thinks its cooler
