So I've been having some conversations lately about judging. Just wanted to hear everyone's opinions on who in skiing right now would be impartial enough yet also in-the-know enough to make a good newschool judge.

Thoughts?

sad to say it, but douglas seems like he's conforming to the espn format when it comes to comps. just listen to his commentating on jons, tanners, and simons x-games pipe runs this year to see what i'm talking about.

i would like to see guys like philou, deschenaux, dorion, boyd, and jp judging at major events. they are guys who have always done their own thing, have quite successfully been through the competition scene lately, and who would give a breath of fresh air to newschool comps.

i'm with lanks. those are the only guys who know enough about the sport. and i would assume they wouldnt show favoritism to particular skiers.

I'd list a bunch of older athletes that started this gangsta shit, but how impartial can they be? If JP Auclair discovers, sponsors, and practically brings up TJ Schiller, and TJ and say Laurent Favre, or Derek Spong, throw almost the exact same switch 10, who is he going to pick? His friend, fellow Armada rider, and all that, or some random kid?

The biggest issue here is impartiality. Finding qualified impartial judges that aren't morons is tough.

I would also say filmakers, like Johnny D, Eric Iberg, Josh Berman, would be a good call, but again, how impartial can they be?

Reps, team managers? They would be wayyy to biased. Who can we look to? I don't really know the answer but I'll think about it.

All that being said, if we don't factor in impartiality, I'll say any experienced athletes that are not competing or out due to injury (i.e Pep Fujas last year) would be a good choice.

The key now is to, despite some possible biases, give our pro athletes as much judging experience as possible. Everybody loves rider judged events, and the more experience the riders get now, the better equipped they will be to judge when they are older and have more time for those kinds of things. Experience is key, so I say we give it to them.

That and the day Mickael Deshenaux judges a major competition is... the apocalypse?

it doesn't matter who judges what is important is what the judges are told to look for. For instance, the USSA judges suck because they judge based on how closely you conform to mogul steeze

judging is inherintly biased. there is no way to avoid it short of bringing in monkeys to judge. although they would more than likely gravitate towards, say, tanner hall because his skiing most closely replicates the nature of the apes themselves.
the best thing to do, which has already been put forth, is to have injured athletes judge. they know what its like to be in a comp and get screwed by judges so they will make it as impartial as possible. also, the would definitely be the most knowledgable.

I think in a lotta comps they will put u towards the top of the list because u have a name for urself already, and they expect u to do better than how u actually do

RetardedMuffin, (very descriptive name), judges cannot be told exactly what to look for. Our way of skiing is complex with many different styles meshing together and no one style as the supreme goal. If judges are told what to look for, they are punishing one style over another that may well be just as good. Should we punish Pep because he's not as gorrila as Tanner? Or Jon if his true nose is not quite true, but everybody else's blunt grabs are true tail? Once again, like said, the key is experience, and our athletes are the ones who have it and have the potential to be the best at it. If we tell our judges exactly what to look for, then we are promoting a uniform style. Then that takes the "free" out of freestyle and we are no better than FIS, the USSA, or any of those other big gay dinosaurs that we all hate.

You made a comment about Filmmakers judging comps. I think this would cause more of an impartiality issue than fellow riders would. Filmmakers would LOVE to see their riders place good in comps. The better their riders place, and make a name for themselves, the more people will buy a movie featuring that rider. So, in essence, there is money in the picture for them. Whereas, other riders would just like to see their friends do well.

I think that other riders (ones mentioned above) would be the best judges. Fellow skiers know how hard certain tricks are and will be able to recognize when people are throwing down unnatty. The best person to judge a newschool comp is somebody who has competed in comps before and is at a similar level to those skiers competing. Joel suggested a few riders that I think would make good judges.

Im telling you guys. you just need to have a diverse variety of judges. let me flesh out my point:
if TJ Schiller is going against Charles Gagnier and Charles does a switch 10 that is the same as Schillers but stomps the landing better than Schillers. The judging could be something like this:
JP Auclair: Likes Schiller gives him a 92 and Gagnier a 91
Mike Douglas: Knows Schiller from Momentum, gives Schiller 91 and Gagnier a 90
Phil Belanger: Likes Gagnier, gives him 93 and Schiller a 90
Boyd Easley: Is drunk, gives both a 5
Shane Szocs: Impartial, gives gagnier a 92 and schiller a 90
Vinnie Dorion: Impartial, gives gagnier a 91 and Schiller a 90

I am too lazy to continue, but you can see that as the number of judges increase, the more fair they are. It is the same as taking a survey. The more people in the survey, the more reliable it is.

Fore sure there is favoritism, If hits are similar Judges will go with who they like personaly. Team riders, East Vs West, Underdog vs Superstar. What would work is some good impartial French & Russian judges who we all know show no favoritism. But seriously now
Judging has always been a problem in any sport.
like referees & Linesmen they are not perfect and can make bad calls & Mistakes. Let a computer do the judging it would be more fair for everyone. The computer could film it from many angles and deduct points for lack of standard trick style requirments, and scetchy stuff not properly stomped. Then in the future we would all be robots with computer steeze

Boyd judging a comp would be... interesting. I don't think it's possible to find actual "impartial" judges, so maybe just getting everyone way too drunk to know what's going on is the best way of going about things. Now, that didn't make any sense at all. But it doesn't matter. The point is, let me judge WSI next year.

I like the drunk idea.

What would be cool is if they had a comp where random skiers such as ourselves (here on this site) were picked to judge. Some of the people on here have been doing this kind of skiing before they even really knew what this kind of skiing was ('cough' 'cough' me.) I actually don't think you could get more impartial then that.

For comps youd have to get to some sort of special drunken state then, but not quite passed out. Maybe get drunk entirely off cheap wine bought from a drug store for 1.99 a bottle.

I seemed to have the right amount figured out when I hit up the pit pub before my exam on tuesday, but yesterday I overdid it a little. We'll see how that mark turns out. In any case, as long as booze is in constant supply, I'm there.

I might have been a little categorical earlier, but you know, I have this fetish for Zero spins. In reality I'd probably score you higher for leaving the competition area and tossing a lincoln off a nearby cliff.

Yeah he's cool he judged here in Quebec last year, But wouldn't he favour Armada or Oakley or D-Structure riders It's a tough call when it's tight, you favour your own.

Kent Kreitler (sp?) and Sage Cattabriga-alamosawhatthfuckhowlongishisname (sp?) would both be very knowledgeable and non-biased, I believe. Two of the most incredible skiers that don't have "crews" of competition skiers. Shit Rossi doesn't even have many comp skiers either so neither could be biased toward those riders either! HA!

The best would be having no judges and just have the skiers in the comp decide who wins so then its just like a jam and its ten times more fun and fair then having judges.

coaches like Nate from CVA or Mike Hanley from Squaw, who have their eyes trained on their skiers every day, understand the tricks inside and out, and understand the style through daily discussion with their athletes. These guys wouldn't want to have a reputation of favoring their guys either.
