Swandog7^ to support that blanks post, the 162 size will be perfect, it may sound long but a good rule of thumb for experienced park skiers is about no longer than 2cm taller than you and no shorter than mid forehead give or take. id say anywhere from 156-164 would fit your son. I'm 5'6 (169cm) and using 170s so up to my head, so for your son the 163/164 will be to the top of your kids head. NOTE: some companies run big or small, so before you buy go to a shop and check or ask someone who has the ski for a tip to tail measurement.
Also rockered skis ski shorter than full cambered skis). Also maybe ask him what type of he skis he wants (rockered or cambered, soft or stiff) and find something to fit your budget. IMO buying last years graphics are completely worth it to get them half off. (Surface Blanks don't change graphics fyi) Buy a ski that has a profile that your son wants, not whats the cheapest or whatever. Research some of these skis. Sometimes buying more expensive skis are more worth it as they sometimes last longer, depending on abuse and company you buy from.
Skis I recommend
ON3P Filthy Rich 161 (heard great things about ON3P)
Surface Blanks 162 (cheap and reliable)
4FRNT switchblade 156
Armada AR7 161
Moment Carson 160 (love my Moments, recommend these)
Jskis Whip it 164
KravtZI wouldn't get the kid a rockered ski...I feel like younger skiers will benefit from having a full cambered ski to develop their skiing. Not to mention as a pure park ski as the OP described...wouldn't you think camber would be best? Most park skis are basically fully cambered.
dhdadThanks for all the input. I think the Volkl Wall is a great looking ski but doesn't seem to be any of last years left at the 161 size and $549 is a lot for a ski for a kid who's still growing. Found last year's future spin 157 for $239 and he's really progressed past year and a half on his future spin 147s so seems like a no brainer for this season then look for maybe the next sz up wall as a leftover at the end of the season. Forgot to mention he competes pipe too so def need a camber ski.
