Calling All Atheists

***First off I just want to say im not trying to start a shit storm by any means although unfortunately, one is most likely imminent.

I just have a quick question for you. I'm a practicing Catholic. That being said, Im not some radical, fundamentalist that tries to shove religion or God down peoples throats. Please re-read that last statement before you try to post some smart comment. But any way, Im NOT a creationist. I believe in evolution and the big bang theory simply because evolution has been proven and the big bang theory is the most plausible explanation for how our universe came to exist. But my question for all the atheists that dont believe in any god at all, is how did that hot, microscopic ball of gasses and other matter come about? Once again, im just curious to hear how atheists explain this or if the majority of them believe in a different theory of how the universe first came about. Im not trying to push religion on any one.

You're completely misrepresenting what he said. He was quite obviously referring to young earth creationists when he said "half of americans." If he meant all people who believe in god, why would he have said half of americans when probably more like 80-90% believe in god?

And for the record, young earth creationists absolutely ARE ignorant about the origin of the universe, life, evolution, etc.

thats like people saying 1+1= fish, you know its not true, it can be proved that its not true. you cant prove that god does not exist, and you cannot prove that he does, no one knows. people (more than half in the world) choose to believe in something of a higher power spiritual or not. majority of them is god or allah. and since were on the subject, why does believing in a higher power that created everything, loves you, wants you to do good in this life and other's that you may or may not have such a bad thing? in other words why does it give you guys such a bad vibe and give you a need to argue about you being correct or not?

You are changing your stance here. You were just arguing for young earth creationism (highly controversial) to a stance that is not able to be proven false or correct.

I'm pretty sure Bill.Nye is refering to YEC here, not the general belief of God, am I right?

this, its such an obvious idea but so many people fail to see it lol. i cant believe people ask "how can you believe in god and evolution at the same time?" its really quite easy and makes sense to believe in both, I do.

Again, that is NOT WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. 46% of americans believe the earth is less than 10k years old and that humans are not related to other species. That's something that we absolutely can and have proven. You're completely confusing two issues, and I'm not sure if you're doing it on purpose to be misleading or if you just can't tell.

I'm a Christian too buddy, but this kind of talk kind of makes me kind of annoyed. You can't just call atheists out like that, and then act like we can PROVE that God exists, b/c we can't, which is why the Bible talks about faith. Don't be insulted when someone has different beliefs than you, and not all atheists are arrogant.

I don't believe in gods. Why don't you believe in Judaism or Islam? Same reason I don't believe Christianity. You don't believe in gods either, I just believe in one less. As long as you are not using your religion as a veil to oppress or hate, I have zero problem with it. Much of my family is fairly religious, and they are all completely reasonable and good people.

Don't have to prove religion wrong, just have to show that religion fails to prove itself right.

That being said, it's fairly easy to prove the bible wrong. People now try to say that the bible can be "interpreted" to fit with a modern understanding of science, but there's a reason these interpretations didn't exist until after the science showed that a more honest interpretation of the bible was so wrong.

This is coming from a Christian too.

There is nothing wrong with discussing beliefs and pointing out potential flaws. Don't be so self-concious, they aren't going to eat you. I've had plenty of posts back and forth with Bill.Nye about religon, he's seems alright.

Actually read this, I don't know it's been posted but we read this and a few other readings similar to it in my honors philosophy class, and it gave me a new perspective even as an atheist. definitely worth the read.

It may have been a good argument 300 years ago when it seemed reasonable to assume that a complex thing must be designed, but we now know of a way that complex things can come about that appear to have been designed without having actually been designed (evolution). Even without that though, I think that his assumption that objects which appear to be complex require a designer is fallacious. I mean really, how is it that we detect design? Is it just by seeing that something is "complex?" That's part of it but it's hardly the whole story. We know watches are designed because we designed them, but otherwise we can't really tell if something is designed unless we know how. Crystals for example are highly ordered and display complexity, but they're not designed, and round rubber balls are very simple but are designed.

Ultimately I think it's foolish to look at something (like the complexity of life), decide you don't know something about it (like for example how it got there), then draw a conclusion from that ignorance. We should draw conclusions from things we do know, not things we don't.
