No Poles has gone too far

I've been noticing a worrying trend lately at my home mountain. Most serious park skiers at Stevens Pass, WA go without poles. I guess the general public has taken notice, because when I was freeriding today, I went by a six year old, and guess what, NO POLES. Absolute beginner too.

I come home today, and did a little research before making some sort of stupid thread, and guess what I found - ITS SPREADING. There are hundreds of pictures out there on google of  "My first time skiing" and VERY few have poles in hand. Proof:

Little does this little one know that they are weighing in on one of the great debates of freesking.

The implications of an entire generation of new skiers riding without poles is staggering. Thats not the worst of it however. Apparently, at some places they actually TEACH PEOPLE TO SKI WITHOUT POLES.

Get these children some aluminum, baskets and grips, pronto.

Look, I take neither side in this debate. I know no poles has been hated on for a while, but really? Swaying the ski culture by brainwashing children? Thats a massive step over the line for me. For the love of God, THEY'RE ONLY CHILDREN. WHY DID YOU ASSHOLES GET THEM INVOLVED!?!

when i started skiing my parents put me in lessons. I think by the time I was in lessons I was around 5 or 6 years old. anyways, before lessons (so like 4 or 5 with the parents) I was "using" poles. When I started my ski lessons the ski instructor took my poles away. said i wasn't ready for them yet. at the time, i was pissed 'cause i thought the poles were fun, but it did help my balance and make me a better skier.

these little kids you see without poles, are they per chance in a lesson, or are part of a lesson at some point during their day on the hill? probably. still today i know many ski instructors at my hill that make the kids loose their poles for most of the lesson... it's just better.


so no poles hasn't gone too far, it in fact has been this way for at least 20 years, probably longer. I think you should do what everyone should do when it comes to no poles and not give a fuck about what other people choose to do with themselves.

Im sorry but why would you post a bunch of pictures of beginners without poles

here in switzlerand its normal to learn without poles...

Its just the Pep Fujas hype and yer some people prefer no poles...

But it cant go to far. Its still very much so a minority. Most people prefer poles.

a ton of little kids dont use poles. i never did for the first 5 years of my skiing life. i always thought they got in the way and it was to much to think about when your only like 4

Well young begginners with no poles probally has little to do with park riders w/o poles and more to do with instructors starting them out like that.

With a group of begginers we (instructors) generally dont like them poking each other eyes out so we dont let them use poles... this carries over into them freeskiing w/o poles.

kids don't use poles because it is easier to learn skiing without poles. When instructing, we usually teach kids without them having poles, because they tend to rely on them for balance which can lead to bad habits in stance and balance. At slow speeds all poles do is make skiing more complicated when it doesn't have to be.

Words of wisdom from an NS noob, versus the thread creator who has clearly not been paying attention to how skiing is taught for beginners.  its an amusing thread as a joke, but seriously THIS IS NOT A FREESKI TREND SPREAD TO 5 YEAR OLDS.  Poles are unnecesary and a distraction if you are just getting the feeling of skis doown. I dunno about dangerous, just not needed.  When still in a snowplow, you won't pole plant. 

Sparknotes- Kiddies have been skiing w/out poles forever as a thecnique to make basic skiing easier.  The no pole-on complex has been in freeskiing for a 5 years max.   Hate to be the buzzkill, but there's no connection.
