I was hoping to mount a lavaliere mic to a skier this year and wondered what would be the best way to do it when they have a jacket on and things like that. Has anyone here done this before? I know that Teton Gravity do it for their movies
Under jacket works, but is kinda muffled, a nice wind screen (dead cat style) on top of your lav outside the jacket would be ideal.
I planned on trying this year so we'll see haha!

Seems like you figured out your question, but im just wondering what you're looking to use it for? Course previews? I think product/ ski reviews could be interesting, when i was in to longboarding i used to watch these board, trucks, and wheel reviews where a guy would go down a hill and talk about what he thought about the wheel in the moment.

I want to get comments from the skier like "I want to hit that rail etc..."
Teton Gravity did it in their movie a lot even in the trailer with Durtschi and others
anybody tried recording with an iphone or something similar in the skiers pocket? figured i might try it as a cheap alternative, i know its not going to give quite the same quality but might pick up sounds better than a rode mic at 10-15ft...

If you're trying to capture the skier speaking, I'd suggest picking up one of the cheaper rode LAV mics. Theyre only like $60 or $70 and plug right into an iphone.

Was thinking more clearer/louder audio of rails, take offs and landings etc.

The problem is that mic will bounce around, causing lots of issues.
IMO a shotgun mic with a good deadcat and a good audio level for the camera being used works well, ski sounds are usually pretty loud.

What Heath said, I tried it last year and it was way too bouncy and ruffled by the jacket pocket. Also eventually it fell out of the pocket.
anyone try taping the lav to the skiers leg or anything like that?

Like dangling outside? Lavs are super bad in any sort of wind.
A shotgun with a good deadcat will always be the best IMO.
i tried mounting a lav down my pants and onto my boot once, the kid filming had a styrofoam windscreen on it, and he swore by it to get the stomping noise on landings and rail noise

did it work?
From what he says it works wonderfully, he never got back to me with an edit, but i'd love to see it tested
